new belts pulleys squealing like mad
« on: October 13, 2011, 06:24:22 PM »
I just had new belts put on my 78 Pinto and now when I fisrt take off,the belts squawk like bloody hll. Did they make them too tight? Will they stop as they break in? I know the book says tighten to 100 lbs and a new belt to 140. I assume they loosen some, but so far (almost a week) they havent stopped squealing but as I drive it gets better, until the next time I go anywhere.

I guess actually its the pulleys its way too loud and scary to be the belts themselves.

It sounds like they need tightened up. I tighten them till I can twist the belt 1/4 turn

Buy some belt dressing , for your new belts....Make sure they are tight to spec.....Your new belts may be to short.....They will stretch over time.....
