Title: What bellhousing do I have and will it work for the T5 swap?
Post by: russosborne on August 23, 2014, 01:56:38 AM
First, my engine is not a Pinto 2.3l. Not sure exactly, but it is an 80's best I can tell.

That being said, I was looking at posts about the T5 swap with the 2.3, and saw that the D9 bell was the one to use. So I thought I should look and see what mine is.

Well, it must have been the one from the current 2.3. It is an E6.

So I am wondering just what do I have?

Will it work with the Pinto clutch cable, will it work with the FOG 4 speed, and will it work with the T5 swap?

Thanks,
Russ

Your bellhousing is the standard 2.3/T5 one. The rear-pull  bellcrank cable linkage gives it away. The Pinto cable will hook up, but the bellhousing's ear will cause it to hit the crossmember. That's why the D9 bells are more desirable; they accept a T5 and use a front-pull fork like the Pinto FOG and the cable clears the crossmember.

I think it still requires a shorter driveshaft and cutting the tunnel though.

Ok, I have been doing lots of reading here and elsewhere. I guess things aren't that bad with the bellhousing I have. :) I can either notch the crossmember or do the Joe Escobar fix, which looks simple enough once I quit looking at his pictures for something complicated and saw it was just a little metal bracket.  :-[

I don't understand about the cross member, but my car came without any transmission, no crossmember, and the newer 2.3 bellhousing in the cargo area. So I don't have any reference to why there is interference.

So my engine/clutch is setup for the T5. Now I just have to wait until I can afford to buy one.

I suspect the interference talked about was between the clutch cable and the engine cross member when using the bell crank style bell housing.  Offsetting the cable with a bracket solves that.  The stock Pinto transmission cross member can be modified to work with the T5.  This link may clear it up.

Making the little bracket to offset the cable is really the easiest solution.

Thanks all.

I will definitely go the bracket solution if/when I get that far.

I also came across a post that had this link

It's an adapter to use the 5.0 bellhousing on a 2.3. Then you use a 5.0 clutch and stuff. Interesting. Although I don't know what issues there would be with the clutch cable and anything else. I think it was designed for Mustangs? But it is an option.
