Title: Visual differences between a '74 2.0 and 2.3 and manual transmission question
Post by: russosborne on July 01, 2014, 11:44:47 PM

Is it easy to tell just by looking which engine is in my 74 wagon? Getting it tomorrow, but I don't have a clue about that year yet, just know that both engines were available. Not sure if I have ever seen a 2.0 close up.
Or is this something I will need to decode the numbers on?

This car also has a manual trans. Sorry for the cluelessness, but would it be a 3 speed or a 4 speed? Trans is out of the car, can't play with the shifter to tell.  :o

I've got so much to learn.  :-[
Thanks,
Russ

Hi Russ,

Yes it is easy to tell which engine you have.  If it is a 2.0 the distributor is at the very front of the engine and the exhaust manifold bolts are directly on top of each other on the 2.0 and the 2.3 exhaust manifold they are front to back.  also look for clues on the valve cover such as an emission sticker.

Well, according to an online vin decoder I found, this car came with a 2.0L. Built in San Jose.
I was hoping for a 2.3, but guess I can live with the 2.0 for now.

also look for clues on the valve cover such as an emission sticker.

The valve cover itself offers a subtle clue: the front of the 2.0 VC has two horizontal bolts going into the cam tower. 2.3s don't.

2.0s also have a fuel pump with bolts at the top and bottom. A 2.3's fuel pump has bolts at the front and rear.

Although you probably know what it is by now, I figure it may be helpful if someone else searches and finds this thread. ;)
