Hello there!

Other than on the driver side windshield or door jam, where can I find the VIN?

I've looked all over the engine and can't find it.

On my 72, there are partial VIN's stamped in engine bay area on top of both sheet metal inner fenders under where the front exterior fenders bolt down.  The number is about a foot back from the radiator core support.  To see this, you have to remove the exterior fender and scrap away the putty from the top of the inner fender (a wire brush helps also).  The number stamped there is missing the second, third, and fourth digit, i.e. VIN=9T11Y123456, stamp=9T123456.  The stamped numbers also have small stars at the start and at the end of the number for some reason.

I'm pretty sure the VIN is stamped in the spotwelded rear panel behind the bumper as well.

Related question...
A mechanic told me that the carb on my car didn't come with the car, although it's the right one for the engine. He said it wouldn't match the other car numbers. I didn't know that the carb also had numbers assigned to a specific car.
So, does the carb affect a numbers matching car?

Carbs are date coded but don't carry a VIN to go with a specific car. Usually just body, engine, trans & sometimes an axle tag carry a VIN. The rest is date coded & should pre-date the build date of the car.

Actually to be precise Ford's dont have vin #'s assigned to the motor and trans or diff. there is therefore no such thing as a matching numbers Ford. As long as the casting codes on the block/cases are correct and match the vin/build sheet/ other available options and prerequisites, the engine matches the vin code and the cast date is prior to the production date of the car then the engine is considered correct for the car. If i blew up the original motor in my 69 and got another 69 block that was cast before the car was assembled it is technically a legit correct car. ( i Didn't blow it up but it did end up in a hot rod f150 for several years.)same goes for trans and rears.
