V8 C-4 Transmission help

I'm new to Fords and this forum.(I'm a Chevy guy) :-[ My 14 year old son bought a 1980 Bobcat with a 351 Windsor in it with a bad transmission. We did get a rebuilt C-4 transmission with it and the one that is in it is a automatic but not a C-4. I have been trying to do some research on what parts we need, flex plate, torque converter and anything else needed to get it in there. The transmission that we got with the car has the dipstick in the pan and as I understand or think I understand it takes a different torque converter than a case fill transmission. Any help on what we need to get this thing going would be great.

Typically, a case fill C4 has a 164 tooth flywheel, and is probably a big bell C4 (bellhousing bolts to the case, not the pump). Post a pic of the pan, modulator, or servo to determine what you have.

what you have pictured is commonly called a C5  .. it usually comes behind 351 windsor motors in ford vans or trucks .. it has more clutches in the clutch drums .. it is a beafier trans ...

Big bell C4 with 164 tooth flexplate. Most likely post 1970. That matters because the input splines for converter are different than earlier. Count the splines on the input shaft and start surfing converter specs on Summit.

Already counted them... 26 spline.. Will this transmission fit in his Bobcat?

This will help you narrow it down a bit more.

"The early model C4 (1964–1969) used a .788-inch 24-spline input shaft, which was upgraded in 1970 to 26-spline and .839-inch. The upgrade also included a matching clutch hub of 26-spline. In 1971, Ford went to a 26/24-spline input shaft, meaning the torque-converter side is 26-spline and the clutch hub is 24-spline."

The small shaft that pulls out has 26 splines and the large shaft has 32 splines

26 spline is what you'll need. Make sure the converter bolt pattern is correct for a 164 flexplate, and if it's an early 351, the flexplate is a 28oz imbalance. Tons of good info at TCI.
