Title: V6 front shocks suggestions
Post by: 78_starsky on August 07, 2013, 06:35:14 PM
Hey all,    Needing to know what type of shocks you are running up front with a V6 (if that matters any)  next week sometime i will be putting the chromed a arms and bottoms on the front end,  while there redoing the shocks.

what are you running?
and do you like them enough to buy them again?
thanks

just running monroe's at the moment, they are acceptable for reasonable factory facimilies and for us wagon owners mate up in the back with a  set off a mid 70's camaro which match the stock ones for which you can no longer find a listing.  they also have rear coil overs in the same line but again for us wagon guys. i think bilstein and kyb build some midrange stuff,   qa1's are a pretty serious upgrade of the aluminum coil over variety that would go nice with the chrome but are quite spendy.. Since you're at it anyways go to fatman or the like and grab a strut rod eliminator kit that triangulates the lower arm, it is small matter of laying down a couple beads of weld on the crossmember for the tubes and gussets. When i tear down the front end to add another 2 inches to the rotors over the granada ones it's on the list.

So coil overs/ air shocks from possibly a 70-81 firebird/camaro would possibly fit

Fronts are all the same. I had issues with the economy Monroes. Used them for years with no issues until this car. Received one that the check ball was missing (hydraulic fluid all over the bottom of the shipping box), one that was normal (hard to compress, rebounded quickly), and two that seemed like they were not gas charged (hard to compress, ssslllllooooow wwww rebound). I'm waiting for payday, and ordering some KYB's. :)

jonah, go back and read my post again.  wagons have different rears from sedans. the fronts are the same.   71-81 ish camaro / firechicken rears will work for a wagon. You can also get a coilover version from monroe. fronts are all the same wagon vs sedan but no the camaro/firebird ones are not meant for the front. the front part number is however still available.

1971 to 1980 ALL Pinto & Bobcat sedans, Runabouts & wagons take the same FRONT shocks. All fronts only are the same.

Apparently all 71 to 80 wagons take the same rear shocks which are hard to find but the late F-body Camaro/Firebird shocks work.

71 to 73 Runabout & sedan rear shocks are different from 74-up Runabout & sedan rear shocks.

I hope that helps. BTW, I have KYB GR2 shocks on my '80 but can't rate them since it's not on the road yet.
