Title: V-6 Fan Shroud Variations
Post by: Pintopower on March 22, 2012, 05:34:01 PM
Guys, this is an annoying problem I have been having for quite some time. The V-6 fan shroud that I keep seeing is nothing like the V-6 shrouds on my cars. All the ones I see hang off the radiator about 20mm more than mine. On top of that, there is a rather large gap at the top of these shrouds. I have two of these at home but they will not fit for the following reasons:
 1. Radiator outlets & inlets interfere
 2. Mounting holes do not line up
 3. Interferes with the AC compressor
 4. Fan hits on one side
Please note, the two cars I have with the shrouds were unmolested cars. The third one I have needs one. All three cars have the factory radiators, factory fans, A/C, P/S, P/B. They are '76, '77 & 79. Here are some basic shots of how it looks in the cars. Note the notch for the AC compressor and how the whole shroud is flush to the radiator with our a large gap at the top. I need one for my '79 but I seem to have the only two in existence. I have had 3 people very kindly send me images of what they have, all that have come from V-6's with factory air but those will not fit on my cars. Here are mine:

I found a picture of the V6 shroud I keep getting offered in a car. This is a factory non-AC Pinto. Please note the gap visible at the top of the shroud between the radiator and upper portion of the shroud. Second, please note the smooth contour of the right side ot the shroud; no notch for the AC compressor and though hard to see, this version sticks out MUCH more than the other vesion into the engine bay. This style is for a factory non-A/C car. I know the shots are bad. As soon as I get to one of my original V6's, I will take some detail photos.

Here are some pics of my V6 non-A/C car. I replaced the raditor with a NOS Modine. It was an exact match. The shroud, bolt and clips are original.

Flash041,

That is the one I keep finding. That is the correct one for a non-AC car. When it is mounted to an AC car radiator, it protrudes way to far into the engine bay and interferes with the compressor. Also, the notch in the top of it becomes exposed and allows for air to be pulled in around the radiator. Thank you for posting those pictures. Sadly, I just cannot come across the AC shroud.

Blink77,
Ricpinto gave me these numbers and I quote:
W/AC D52E-BA. The standard & extra cool would have # D52E-AA on it.
The rad. used W/AC should have number D52H 8005 -HA either on the top tank or one of the side brackets.

So far I know the correct one for an A/C car (images of my two Pintos) and thanks to Flash041, what the correct one for a NON A/C is.

I just pulled a shroud from a '79 Bobcat with A/C, however it was 2.3L 4cyl motor. The shroud looks nearly identical to the one you posted (missing the conture on the right side for compressor clearance, but with the exception of no "CAUTION FAN" sticker, instead it is molded into the should with raise lettering. It does have the gap between the radiator and the shroud though.

This shroud has reinforcement ribs about an inch and a quarter away from each mounting tab, and a rib between the tabs.

Number on it is D52E-8146-CIB

Man I havent had any luck finding the A/C shroud anywhere. It's odd that I keep finding these non-a/c ones every where but the only A/C ones i have seen are in my two factory Air cars. Keep your eyes open for me guys, my '79 needs one now that it got a new radiator and stock components back in there. Thanks!

A while back I send you the engineering number (D52E-BA) for the shroud. The actual part number is D5FZ-8146-B.  I have been unable to locate one through the places I normally use.
 I'll keep looking.
