Transmission help
« on: April 29, 2018, 09:49:47 PM »
Hello I am wondering if an SR4 transmission would work with an 87 2.3t swap? The trans came out of an 80 mustang 2.3 turbo carb car. I came across this at a local pull your part yard and I think some came in the pintos. So would i have to cut a hole for the shifter or would this one fit fine?

I used one in a turbo pinto drag car when they first hit the wrecker yards in the early 80,s , but dont think I had to cut out the shifeter hole to make it work , It was a much stonger trans than the type "E" trans the pinto came with , use to ripe out first gear if I poped the clutch out to fast ,, The SRD was the grand dady to the T-5 , first gear was lower ratio also , grab the engine too ,  that engine cam with the 9.1 TRW pistons which were very stong and the clutch and disk were heavy duty idems ,

The irony is that the SROD trans is likely better than any Pinto trans. But in the V-8 world most people hate it.  Funny how tat works out some times.

Gear oil... Not ATF! Double check what weight. Royal Purple has some good stuff.

Which "These" are you asking about? The T-5 or the SROD?

The earlier T-5's required gear oil, but the later T-5's used ATF.  I do not know what the cut-off year was.  All I know is my T-5 is an '88 and uses ATF (Dextron).

The SROD I do not know at all but likey takes some form of gear oil.

It is best to know the year your transmission type is from. And, frankly, not that people here don't want to help, but you will likely get a faster, better response asking at a Fox Body Mustang site. Those transmissions were used extensively in the Mustang for many years.  Here only a handful of people have used the T-5 and likely a very smaller few have used the SROD.

Nothing I can find would incline me to use one if other options like the T5 were available. The bellhousing might fit a Tremec though.

The earlier T-5's required gear oil, but the later T-5's used ATF.  I do not know what the cut-off year was.
In general production, 1986 and later Fords have World Class T5s that use ATF.

So will the bell housing fit a t5 or this bell housing is only for an SROD?

Only T5 bells and some '70s 2.3L/4-speed bells will fit on a T5.
