Engine weights
« on: June 02, 2005, 05:54:58 PM »
I was searching for the weight of a 302 a while ago and i stumbled on something (which of course i can't find anymore) that said the ford 2.8 was lighter than the 2.3. Anyone have any info on that? It would make sense to me the smaller engine would be lighter than the bigger on, generally speaking. just wondering...

The reason the 2.8 is lighter is because the block and heads are not as big and thick as the 2.3's.  I can pick up a bare 2.8 block myself where as I need help with a 2.3 block.

This is one of the reasons the v6 pinto was never offered with a manual transmission.  Ford couldn't have the lighter pinto outrunning the v8 mustang II and getting better mileage to boot, so they mated it to the c3 slushbox slip-o-matic.
