Carburetor
« on: December 24, 2011, 11:55:27 AM »
:(Have 1977 Pinto 2300 installed in my recently completed 52 MG kit car. Engine has been completely rebuilt as has carb, 5200 Holley. Timing has been checked. All vacuum lines are capped off except for line to distributor. Engine will not run at idle unless choke butterflies are 95% closed. If while engine running I open them more than 95% engine dies. After engine is warmed up still requires that choke be closed to 95%. I can advance trottle and raise engine rpms to 3500 or so but if I open the choke the engine stalls.  I have never run into such a problem in all my years of car tinkering. It seems that there is not enough vacuum in the throttle bores to pull fuel off the idle and high speed circuits. Any thoughts are really appreciated.

It sounds to me like you may have an issue with a lean condition but its hard to say exactly what it may be. Does the engine backfire when you crank the throttle open? Something to take a good look at is a vacuum leak. Try spraying carb cleaner around the base of the carb and all around the intake manifold. Have you been able to take the car out for a drive?

I have had this issue when the distributer timing is off

I have been able to drive the car and at 2000 RPM and up it will run okay, choke butterfly still 90% closed, but when I slow down like for a stop it will buck and carry on and then quit. I am going to re-verify all timing settings, belt, TDC, distributor, etc. Then check for vacuum leaks using a smoke machine. If none of these fix it I will re-build the carb again. Maybe I missed something.

I would suspect several things
1. Huge vacuum leak...  Check the hose from the PVC and the PVC valve.  Block the hose as a test.
2.  EGR valve could be stuck open.  You could take this apart and block it off.
3.  Carb has a problem and is running way too lean.
