1980 2.3. Where does the mark on the balance shaft sprocket line up. Don't see a triangle or diamond or any mark on the engine or.  Also no mark on the distributor plate to mark number 1

As I recall and it has been lots of years since I replaced my timing belt, I do not recall a timing mark on the aux shaft. Crank lines up with timing mark on cover, cam you can see through the plug in cover and it is at about 5 o'clock. Aline dist rotor with number one on the cap. Which looks to be straight out from the engine. Dist rotates clockwise according to the picture I am looking at.

It's not a balance shaft, it's an auxiliary shaft that drives the oil pump, fuel pump, and distributor. Orientation doesn't matter as long as you can rotate the distributor enough to properly set the timing.
Likewise, the #1 distributor terminal can be any of the four as long as the rotor is pointing at it when the #1 cylinder is at TDC.

I'll add that whenever I change a timing belt I put different color paint marks on the belts and pulleys. I then transfer those marks to the new belt. That way there is  misunderstandi ng vague markers that might have scuffed off, bent, broken etc.. I also take before and after pictures. It adds 10 minutes to the task and eliminates 99.9% WHAT!!! - if later something isn't working right. I'm getting too old to remember..., if I remembered.
