Title: Tailgate Lock/key cylinder for 73 Wagon
Post by: mrmellowgold on October 25, 2013, 10:04:35 AM
My 73 wagon is missing the lock cylinder for the rear tailgate. It's just a hole, but the bad thing is that someone can just wiggle there finger around in there and open the hatch with a push of a lever on the left inside. I have been looking around on ebay, but I only find door lock cylinders. (I hope my terminology is correct, correct me if I'm wrong)
So does anyone know where to find one for the tailgate or can I order and install one made for the door?
I don't need anyone steeling my infinity speakers and box i just got for it :)

If you are unable to locate a used one, Miller Obsolete Parts shows one in stock. (lock & keys)  $35 + ship
Yes, they are different than the doors.

They are different but my cars always used the same key. Probably people selling them in sets with the d oor locks.

These are a set of all the locks and keys. Mine is a 1973 wagon and it uses the same key in everything!

Found the trunk lock only for $25.00 on ebay and $6.00 shipping if you don't mind them not matching. You could probably get a locksmith to rekey it to match for you also!

I meant that the door & L/G lock cylinders are different. I realize that in the case of everything being 'original' they would be keyed alike.                However weather he gets a new or used lock cylinder it will need to be rekeyed to match his door key. I'm pretty sure any good locksmith                can do that in 15 minutes or less.

Sorry, here are the complete set of locks including ignition.

At $70.00 and 9.00 shipping it might be cheaper to replace all of them instead of just doing one and having a locksmith do it. That's if you can do it yourself I guess.

Hmm, every Pinto I have seen has a different key for the trunk/rear tailgate. Door and ignition are the same, stock key is square head. Trunk/lift gate is a different "mirrored" tooth (the step of the key goes to the opposite side of the ignition key style), and has a round head.

EDIT: Correction. Station wagon's have the same key all around. I've had my Sedan for way to long, it's starting to confuse me! DOH!

Funny, depends on the year and model I guess on the keys. Ford must have been trying to save the 10 cents when they made the 73 wagon LOL

I dont mind if it dosnt match with the doors, though it would be really cool if it did. My main question is, is the trunk lock, hatchback lock, door lock, different than the tailgate lock for my WAGON? I do not see anything on ebay or online that confirms what will fit the WAGON tailgate.

The link I sent you was for a wagon with all the locks and ignition switch at like 70 bucks...

May still be missing a small part in that set. I see two doorlocks with the actuating rocker arms, the tailgate also has some sort of end-of-cylinder rocker arm or close, it swings to hit the lever mentioned that pops door loose. Don't see one in that kit although I see retainer clips and other small parts. The rocker goes on end of cylinder just like the two door locks have one, thinking the rocker shaped different and has no hole in it. You would use existing other parts to hook up cylinder, may not have them or it, as the case may be. When tailgate cylinder was removed it came out with the rocker on it, why it's missing too.

My 73 sedan takes an oval trunk key but the square key fits every other lock. My other Pintos only use the square key to fit all locks.
