Windshield fit?
« on: March 24, 2012, 03:42:01 PM »
Ive looked around and cant find an answer.
Will the windshield from a 78-80 pinto fit the older pintos? Mainly my 75 wagon
I know the later models the windshield is a glue in, not using the seal type. That part dont bother me, I can make trim to for it.
I can get a new windshield for a 78-80 for $70 thru work but need to know if it will fit.

Please I need a defiant yes or no answer, not a it should fit.
I dont mean to be blunt but the windshield is only available for a few days and I need to move fast on it.

With a cutting torch and welded anything will fit.

Actually as far as ive been told the frame on the car for the windshield is the same. All thats different is the size of the glass and the way its put in glue in vs pop in. The 78 and above will fit fine as long as you get a matching seal for it, also say goodbye to your chrome as it will no longer fit.

Hey wedge446:

The Ford part number for the windshield for '73 through '78 is the same
for all Pintos, D1FZ6203100A for clear and D1FZ6203100B for tinted with
a NAGS NO. of W774.  It does change for '79 Pintos to
D9FZ6203100A for clear and D9FZ6203100B for tinted with a NAGS NO. of W892.

Thanks,

Here is a thread I started on the fitment of Pinto windshields:

http://www.fordpinto.com/pinto-faq/windshield-swaps-what-will-fit/msg94944/#msg94944

For cars produced BEFORE 06/78 (June of 1978), you will be using a gasket type windshield.

For cars produced AFTER 06/78, you will be using the larger windshield which is held in place by sealant.

Sometime in June of 1978 they changed the way the windshield was secured in the car and they began gluing them into place.

When using a glue-in windshield, you will have or need the frame trim that goes around the sides and top of the inside window frame. You can get any color one you like, and you can paint it the color of your interior using SEM Color Coat, which you can obtain from any auto paint shop. This interior frame trim covers the gap between the windshield and the frame that the gasket originally would fill. I believe there is a piece that goes along the bottom of the windshield and the dash, but I have not verified that yet.

I have gasket windshields on both my 73 and my 78 (built in april of 1978), but I have an interior trim piece on hand should I need to get a glue-in windshield, since the earlier ones are getting so hard to find.

Short answer to the question, yes it will fit, and yes you can use your original exterior trim, but from the inside you will be staring at the bare frame unless you get the trim that goes around it.

Thanks all for the speedy replies.
The trim Im not worried about. I think I can make the trim needed or use the windshield gasket as the trim. It is only a year old.
The inside trim Im have to custom make anyways because of the alum dash I put in a few years back.

Thanks again

Yeah, a good gasket will fill in around the windshield nicely.

I went out to the junkyard today to pull the dash to windshield filler spacer on the '79 bobcat. It is indeed a part manufactured by ford to fill in the gap, made of rubber just like the early style gaskets are made of. The piece I have is still pliable though, more so after a wash in warm water, which means it should fit well should I need it in the future.

Not sure how you might cut to fit the bottom section of the gasket to fill it all in correctly, because the gasket grips the frame when using a gasket type glass. If you use a glue in glass, you wouldn't have enough space between the glass and the frame to put the gasket on.

I suppose you could cut the outside glass fold off the gasket and glue it to the windshield frame from the inside.
