Title: T5 Swap Approaches, Final questions & help
Post by: 80_2.3_ESS on July 20, 2013, 04:24:08 PM
Looking to get the final pieces of the puzzle for my T5 swap, and need a little help.

From what I am reading, the T5 will require a new, slip-yoke with the proper splines, and that should work with my factory 80 Pinto drive-shaft. What is a good source for the yoke? I see speedway has some, but I wasn't sure if there are any other options.

Speedometer cable, from what I am reading, should be the same. If not, I should be able to get just the proper gear and pop it on. Is this correct?

Reverse lights, I will have to splice the T5 plug onto the current wiring to make the lights come on.

And lastly, the cross-member. If I read correctly, I should be able to re-use the one I have (factory 4-speed), but I will have to slot some of the holes.

On a side note, I know I have to make a little bracket for the clutch (no big deal), however I am thinking I should replace the cable while I am in the car. The current cable is the factory one with over 130k on it. What is a good source for cables?

Thanks so much!

a drive shaft from a fox mustang with the rear flange removed is a drop in...most of the chain parts stores have the clutch cable for a little over 20 bucks.

C-4 slip yoke is also the same as T-5 & I think I read that the speedo cable works but the Pinto gear must be swapped with the one from a T-5. I actually want confirmation of that myself before I swap mine.

Ebay or parts stores have clutch cables. Yes, the trans mount works by slotting the holes & I believe turning it backwards if I remember reading correctly.

I'm pretty sure someone did a post showing the reverse light wiring but I can't find it at the moment. Seemed easy enough.

Thanks guys. I bought all the stuff, then realized my driveshaft wouldnt work lol.

I ended up returning the yoke and got a ln aluminum ford racing driveshaft assembly for the fox body mustangs. Gonna pull the rear flange off and put a new u-joint on it to fit into the 8" rear.

In looking at the reverse plug, its only 2 wires, so it shouldnt be too difficult to figure out lol.

A couple of things.  I went from a 2.0/C-4/6.75 " to a 2.3/T-5/8" and the original driveshaft fit perfectly.  The speedometer gear from the C-4 fit the cable but..., the tip on the end causes issues.  When the housing was tightened down the tip caused it to bind on the inner T-5 case.  This caused the internal gear on the main shaft to walk backwards and disengage.

It was a nightmare to get the gear moved forward again as a metal clip holds it in place.  Prying through the opening with screwdrivers was not working.  Eventually I found found a "torch" style halogen lamp stand and the center tube was "just right." It slipped over the shaft, but did not bind on the bushing and allowed me to push the gear forward.  It was a lot easier to pull the driveshaft than the tail shaft!  Anyway, as I recall (it has been a number of years) I think I ground the tip off the gear.

I reused a cable out of an '80 Pinto. Seems sturdy and hasn't broken yet.  Make sure you use a thick piece of metal to move the cable. To get it upwards, it will also go outwards. Bending the bellcrank slightly helps with alignment. Hope you get it sorted out soon.
