Hey Pinto fellows!
I am working on the interior of my 73 wagon while I wait for the tires to come in and the t-handle shifter is really loose. Like, you can wiggle it left to right with ease, and it can shift without you putting in the button which is not good.... I figured it is just a nut loose inside under the wood grain bezel. I loosened the hex nut/screw on the side of the handle, but I do not know how to take it off. I need to take the top part of the handle off to remove the bezel so i can look inside good. Let me know what you guys know!
Also, the butt part of the front seats are realllllllllly torn up. The backs are pretty nice though. You guys recommend anything? Seat covers maybe? Just taking the ripped leather all off? Let me know! Thanks!

The set screw holds the handle on, back it out and it should come off.

pulling the T off wont reveal anything .. you need to remove the whole shifter and look at the large bolt that holds the handle to the shifter body .. you will need to get under the car and unhook the linkage at he shifter then remove the cover on the inside then 4 3/8ths screws holding the shifter down .. i think there may be a plastic sleeve you can replace or something like that ..it`s been a while since i tightened one up ...

yeah, but i need to remove the handle to take off the bezel to get in it...

Well, like I mentioned earlier take the set screw out and the T handle should come off then slide the bezel off, at least that's what it shows in my Ford manual..

ok .. my 73 has a small allen head screw on the T handle .. i took the screw out and simply pulled up on the T and off it came .. my 80 has no screw .. you simply give it a good snatch and it pops off .. but as i said .. you need not remove the T handle to get the shifter out ..the cover can be removed and taped to the T out of the way .. then the 4 biggers screws are hidden under the carpet at 4 corners .. just pull the cover and see what is flopping ...

That's the way my 74 is with an allen set screw.

There is a large nut that holds the shifter to the pivot in the floor shifter assembly. Between the metal dish and the handle there is a series of metal spring washers and a plastic bushing washer which keep the shifter handle play to a minimum. Once you loosen the nut it will all come apart. I replaced the plastic bushing washer on the '73 wagon that Dianne has when I was restoring it.

No, it goes right over it and sits on top of the bezel you have now. The top portion of the bezel sticks out through the console. Looks really sharp with the automatic bezel there!

THERE IS A AUTO SHIFTER ON EBAY RIGHT NOW SUPER CHEAP!! IF YOU NEED ONE AND YOURS IS WORN OUT!!

Four screws (#2 Phillips), then the cover pops up. Will go all the way up to the handle and let you see what is going on.
The fix is from the underside of the car, let me know when you figure it out. At present, mine is more quiet through zip ties and a Scrunchie. lol
