Title: T BIRD TRANSMISSION
Post by: 8 BALL on October 06, 2011, 12:51:30 PM
I HAVE A 1980 PINTO AND I'M INSTALLING A TURBO ENGINE FROM AN 87 T BIRD. MY QUESTION IS CAN I USE THE 5 SPEED MANUEL TRANSMISSION OUT OF THE T BIRD AND IF SO WHAT CHANGES DO I NEED TO MAKE,I KNOW WHEN I TRIED TO PUT A TRANSMISSION OUT OF A MUSTANG IN MY PINTO,I HADE TO USE MY PINTO BELL HOUSING BECAUSE THE MUSTANG HOUSING HIT THE FIREWALL.MY PINTO IS ALREADY A MANUEL 4 SPEED BUT I DON'T THINK MY BELL HOUSING WILL BOLT TO THE 5 SPEED.

You can use the T-bird 5 speed i have one in my bobcat. You will need a mustang 87-93 4cyl bell or a 79-80 mustang D9 bell which came on the Cobra 4cyl turbo cars. Also another sutible bell is the 5 speed bell of the 83-86 turbo t-birds/cougar the 87-88 use a hydraulic bell that is really more work then its worth.

I have a D9 bell in my bobcat with an 88 Turbo motor and 5 speed. It uses the stock clutch cable and the only thing I had to do to bolt it in is weld a piece of flat steel that was about 4" X 4" X 1/8" to the back of the trans crossmember so it had a place to bolt onto and I also had to enlarge the shifter hole a little farther back for the shifter to clear.

All in all it was one of the easier things ive done to it so far as long as you can weld youll be just fine.

The 4 speed bell will not fit and can not be made to fit....Look for a 1985 and up Mustang with a 2.3 and get the following items.
The bell housing, clutch fork and the clutch cable, including the clevis, the fly wheel and the metal plate between the flywheel and the engine.
I do not know if the pinto plate will fit, it's needed to fit the starter I think.

Dont need the mustang flywheel or the plate that goes between the bell and the engine if you have the ones out of the 87 T-bird just need the bell housing and such.
Also there is one 4 speed bell that will work but its not a pinto bell like i said before its out of the 79-80 cobra mustang that had the carbed 2.3 turbo engine its also know as the D9 2.3 bell because it has D9 as the first 2 numbers in its part number.
The D9 bells are also direct pull (Like a 5.0 bell) unlike the mustang 2.3 bell which has the pivot arm and dogbone cable.
