78 Pinto 2.3 EGR TUBE
« on: March 03, 2015, 12:09:04 AM »
So I got a rookie question, where does the other end of the egr tube connect (exhaust manifold side). I imagine It goes into some pipe on the exhaust manifold, but where? Any pics please. Just picked her up and I'm trying to pass smog. Having a couple of issues. EGR valve was bad, so I ordered and installed one. Only to hear a loud hissing vacuum leak. The other end of the EGR tube. I can put my finger on it and feel the vacuum. So again my rookie question is where does the EGR tube connect. Pics please

It should have a threaded nut fitting on the flared end of the pipe at the manifold side. The nut threads directly into the manifold. There should be a hold near cylinder three or four for it.

Thanks I found a 1/2 pipe thread plug in the exhaust manifold. Luckily I found a fitting and parts to assemble it back to California smog BS. Just paid the dmv to register it. All I need to do is time it properly and hopefully pass smog.

If you want to pass smog, remove the entire EGR plate the is under the carburetor, disassemble and clean in a good cleaner or use Hoppies Number 9 gun cleaner. Why Hoppies ? Because the crap in your EGR system is carbon and of course carbon is also created when firing rifles etc. Some of the hard carbon is going to take some mechanical tools to get it out. I have not had any trouble smogging my Pinto's in California when I did the work.

Cool sounds good. So is this like a spacer, I would need two gaskets?. Carb mounting gasket and spacer to intake gasket maybe? Actually sounds like a job i can get done my self and most likely really dirty in their. I'm having a couple of issues, it idles good in park but stumbles a little in drive. One in a while it while turn off, then starts right up. I suspect a vacuum leak. Thanks for the help @D.R.Ball and Dave1987
