Sulphur Smell from new C.C.
« on: June 02, 2016, 09:23:20 AM »
Okay my fellow enthusiasts, I have a problem and I'm crying out to some of the helpful folks here for assistance - I just installed a new catalytic converter in my 78 Bobcat wagon, 2.3L, Holley 5200 carb about 3 weeks ago - I expected some sulphur smell when I first had it put in, but its been a while now and its still persisting. Just got back from a 1000 mille road trip to a graduation, and I noticed it's worst at acceleration. I also noticed some stuttering when I was passing a slower vehicle and pulled back into the right lane but was still doing about 75 - I had two thoughts - either a clogged EGR valve, or is maybe the mix too rich and the unused fuel is being stored in the C.C. and making the burnt match smell? Any thoughts? Oh, it NEVER did any of that when the old, leaky converter was still installed.

guess you live in a state that your not exempted from the smog crap on the older cars ,  a few things may have happened when you installed the new converter , you may have made a hole or crack in the front pipe to the exhaust manifold , there is a round donut gasket there also , also the pipe to the egr may have cracked also or a rusted hole ,, last could be a bad voltage regulator causing the battery to be overcharged at high speeds and boil the acid and make that smell too, you have to have a leak someplace in the exhaust system if it not that , last crank up the car and have someone (does not have to be a unwanted relative ) take a rag and stuff the tail pipe , that alone will show if you have any leaks , or any leaks near a rusty holes in the floor boards for the fumes to get in , hope this helps you , later Blaine

ok on the battery , max charge voltage should be 14.2 volts , no more , the EGR valve is bolted to the carb adaptor plate , a steel tube about 5/8 inch goes into it , the other end goes to an elbow on the exhaust manifold , to bypass the valve you can unscrew the two bolts on each side of the EGR valve just enough so it can move , make a shim out of a beer can to slide behind the valve and cover up the hole there , tighten the bolts back up , the EGR should be blanked off by doing that so you can test , or leave it that way if it runs well or better ,, and on the smell again you have a wagon , the tail pipe does not go straight out the back of the car , it suppose to make a 90 degree turn to the side of the car , if you have bad seals in the back of the lift gate you will get a draft of exhaust gas that will be pulled in from that area , like I said you have a leak from the exhaust or a place the fumes will get in , if it is very bad you just might fall asleep driving down the road ,

Firstly, cat converters don't store anything but the catalyst materials.

Second, it would be a good idea to check the EGR system functionality even if that's not the problem here. The purpose of the EGR is reduce combustion temperature and thereby reduce formation of oxides of nitrogen that contribute to photochemical smog. It also reduces the tendency to ping with lean cruise mixtures.

I tend to think the stink is coming from a rich mixture especially since it gets worse with acceleration.

Does your car have a smog pump? Cats work better when they have excess oxygen in the exhaust stream. That's partly why a smog pump is used. Lean cruise mixtures are also used to supply some extra oxygen and improve economy, at least in EFI cars. Carbureted engines have worse fuel control so it's a more tedious balancing act.

Well, here's an update - got off work last night early, so I ran up to the local Fleet Farm and got a can of carb cleaner and a roll of high temp fiber gasket maker and decided to see if I could clean the EGR. Long story short, the EGR was almost completely plugged and after about 1/2 hour of scraping, spraying and wire brushing it, I got it cleaned out - luckily it was one of the good older ones that I could really disassemble and give a thorough cleaning. So I made a new gasket, put it all back together and took it out on the highway for a test - Poof! 70% of the smell was gone, and I actually had a badass passing gear! Lol! Anyways, I got it back home and adjusted the mixture - originally I had set it rich to help with starting in the cold Wisconsin winters since I just have a carport and no garage. I bottomed the mix screw all the way in, then ended up (after a few test runs down the highway again) with it backed out about 3/4 of a full revolution of the screw head (originally I had it set to 1 1/4 revolution out) and adjusted the idle speed to where it idles smoothly in park. Held my breath because the big test has always been a cold start in the morning - went out this morning, and she started right up, warmed up quicker than she had, and the sulphur smell is almost completely gone! (A touch of sulphur and exhaust mixed on acceleration, but I always figured that was normal with a new C.C.). Looking forward to increased mileage, already have increased pickup!!

Now that reminds me of the elation when I first had my Dual Side draft Webers in perfect synch, and it screamed to about 7 grand and chirped em going into 3rd.

glad it was a simple fix , most pintos I had over the years I tossed the EGR and smog pump when they gave me any trouble , the state I am in does not have smog inspections , if it pinged I just put in a larger jet , as for the converter I just knock the guts out of it , at least you don't have to hold your breath anymore
