stripping paint from plastic
« on: July 09, 2012, 11:39:27 AM »
Hey guys,

on my 1980 Runabout someone before me painted the woodgrain ebrake handle & shifter trim black & I don't like it. I want the woodgrain look back in the car & am wondering if it is possible to strip paint from plastic without harming or discoloring it. If so what would be used?

Thanks for any tips!

Soaking plastic model kits in brake fluid strips them & won't harm the plastic. I think if you seal the parts up in a tupperware container full of brake fluid overnight it should do the trick.

I've stripped several plastic models by soaking them in
Pine-sol cleaner. This works great on that plastic and
might not be as harsh as brake fluid. Has anyone else
ever tried this? I put it in a "shoe box" size plastic "tote"
and let it soak overnite The paint just wipes off. It works
wonders on "bug bomb" and "model" paint. I'm not sure how
it would work on real automotive paint. I then strain it and
put it back in the bottle till next time.
