My Pinto needs a radiator
« on: January 07, 2019, 06:33:54 PM »
Guys after 2 years of work, and installed a 302 with a Borg Warner 4 speed, I now need a radiator, the radiator has to be mounted forward of the core support, and I know there are a bunch of you guys that have already gone through this, so I will ask WHAT radiator do I need, I temporarily put in an Aluminum 2 core, with a cooling fan, but the vehicles still runs hot, so I am thinking of a 4 core radiator...……  any help given is appreciated, as I would like to drive her to Daytona this spring...……  PLEASE

What radiator do you have now? What are the electric fan specs? What are you using to control it? Which side is the water pump inlet on? What is the engine from? What has been done to it performance-wise?

Hello Shelby, The engine is NOT eccentric, it is from an 85 Lincoln, and has zero performance adds other than ignition, the radiator is a 2 core aluminum 24" wife upper outlet is passenger side, lower is driver side both are 2" in/out, and the cooling fan is an exodus 2000 rpm mass air disposition, and I also have heat exchangers above left and right heads (hood mounted), I would rather keep her a period car, but if I cannot solve the overheat at idle, I am going to convert to 4.6 litre, and I did drive her to Dallas from Ohio to dedicate her to the Band Reckless Kelly, and as long as she had wind in her sails via 65 to 70 mph I had no problem, so now I seek a 4 core radiator...... ...... and I need some input for this

and thanks BROTHER

It sounds like you have an airflow problem at low speed. I don't know what an "Exodus 2000" fan is and there again, you didn't say what fan controller or how it's set up. What are the extra heat exchangers you're talking about?

Swapping to a 4.6 mod motor isn't going to fix the cooling problem.  ???

I have had good luck with this fan..

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00T3U1QRY?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image

mounted on the engine (pulling) side and the thermostat switch sensor mounted at the bottom radiator outlet and the thermostat set at about 170 degrees.

Also.. no need for expensive mounting kits..  plain old nylon wire ties work and are flat so they slide easily thru the core.. just cut the gripper off the end of another set of wire ties and use these to secure the tie after inserting thru the radiator.. and use a metal and rubber washer to prevent damage to fins..

But I would suggest a 3 or 4 core radiator and possibly an engine flush to get rid of any scale built up inside the engine, preventing flow and preventing contact between and heat transfer between the coolant and metal.. also there are wetting agents designed to improve contact between metal and coolant for better heat transfer. Also depending upon what your idle settings are, you might get better cooling by increasing the idle speed using a smaller water pump pulley to move more coolant thru the engine..  best coolant is about a 50 / 50 water, glycol mix
