I keep flip flopping on my plans for the rear end, BUT NOW... I'm liking the idea of "throwing" a jag independent suspension rack back there... I think. I don't know much about the jag, but from pics, it looks like it's easy to fab in. And since I don't have a fuel tank down there, I have the room... I think.
Anyone hear put a jag rear end in anything? Have any more pro's or cons to add to my equation?
I think It would be the beez kneez!

I have been pondering rear ends since I reached puberty.

LOL Joebob.....:)

Same here , but don't let your wife find out or she will break your axle , ::)

Glad to know I'm not the only one!!! ::)

Can't tell you too much other than they (Salisbury) are basically Dana 44 center sections. I think too the ring gear bolts are a different size from the Danas but they make stepping bolts to deal with that. My Sunbeam Tiger has a Salisbury. Now, how you adapt the IRS in is another story. The good news, at least here in So. Cal. the self serve yards are full of Jags. Still not sure I can picture a Pinto with negative rear camber though.

Hmm. I guess I set that one up pretty well!
I think I have a line on a 55" jag assembly. It's about 100 miles out of town though. The 61" seem to be plentiful, and reasonably priced, but 61" is wider than I'm willing to go. For the money though, posi, disc brakes and independent suspension, all for about $500 and a some mild fab work? I'm really leaning towards doing this.
We now return the topic to the gutter... ;)

I've been pondering a IRS swap myself. First started looking at the T-Bird 8.8 IRS, then to the 03/04 Cobra 8.8 IRS, and lastly been looking at the 2015 Mustang IRS. I really like the 2015 but they are harder to find. Depending on what you're going to do with it, one of these may be another solution.

I was under the impression that the Ford IRS sets were not removable as a unit. The attachment points are all integral with the unibody construction. If not, count me in with that idea!

tbird/mark viii units are drop out assemblies

Looks kinda heavy????..

"Looks kinda heavy????.."
X2^ Plus bags, springs, shocks?

Yeah... all the ford irs units I've seen are just huge heavy bulks. I'm fully decided on the 55" jag. It's proving hard to find, but they are out there, just most have been worked or restored already, and want more money than I'm willing pay.
I did find a mounting cage for one, so I'm working on my subframe design to accept it. I was also looking at an acura(i think) irs, and it looked like it would be a pretty good option too, but I can get a wide variety of cool stuff for the jag irs.

Always liked the Jag, best looking one IMO..

My brother just bought a really nice 2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP, 5 speed with an independent rear suspension. The car is rated at 260 horsepower, so that rear end should handle most Pinto apps. Could that suspension be modded into a Pinto chassis? It's a pretty new car and I don't know how many Solstice/ Skyes were made to pick parts from, but, it may be something to look into.

2 problems with the pontiac irs.
A. It's a gm product. I don't really have a favorite brand, but I do have a least favorite. Around here, gm is something you might step in and have to clean your shoes!
B. I have doubts about the parts availability.
-
the jag rear end might not be the way to go unless you like having a 5x108 lug patern and want to run taurus wheels, a toyota irs might be the better choice, better axles, better rear end, mustang lug patern, lighter, needs more fab work, many more plusses, lexus also uses the same rear end, if you want to have chevy lug patern, bo with a bmw rear end swap from a early 90s 5 series or late 80s, it will be a drop out unit like a ford, but has way better geometry for your handling pleasure
-
i fogot to mention the xr4ti rear end, also a drop out unit........ and i have already tried fitting it in, the car will sit significantly lower, just warning
-
I went with the jag for the parts availability as well(aftermarket). The mods to shorten it are pretty straight forward, and easy with a lathe.

i would love to see pics of a pinto with a little camber and some rear wheel meat
