Sticky gas pedal

Imagine if you will, you are driving down the freeway & are behind a slow car so you hit the gas to get into passing gear when you notice that you let off the gas but the car did not.
 
Well, that happened to me many times in the past couple days, so my question is. How do I fix the issue?
 
It's a 77 Pinto, automatic & when I looked under the dash I can see a shiny spot on the gas pedal arm where it is rubbing & apparently catching on the bolt on the gas pedal bracket. Now, it did not always do this & seems like the pedal is shifting over to the left.
 
Any ideas how I can fix this? It ain't very fun to let off the gas & have to hope your foot can get the gas pedal off the floor before you rear end the car in front of you.

I do not know how to fix your problem. I just can not get over the idea that a pinto automatic is passing anybody.

 My guess is if the bolt hasnt been replaced,that the bracket may have distorted some way? Maybe its a problem with where the gas pedal arm pivots? Have you had a good look in those areas?

Ruby is doing something like this... except it happens when I'm upshifting. It's like the gas pedal STAYS on the floor as I'm putting in the clutch to shift, and the engine's basically revving in neutral. The only thing I can do is press the accelerator pedal and whatever's catching uncatches. I've been told it's a worn throttle arm, among other things. I can't spare the cash to replace the carburetor... so I live with it. It is scary, though. :-\

Until you change the arm on the carb, good smart tap on the gas pedal will free it up. One other thing you can do is get a Ford 2 barrel carb form a car with an auto 5200 or 6500 (Ford Mustang etc)  and remove the thorttle arm and then put it on your carb.....It is not to bad to do, you have to remove the carb.

My problem wasn't at the carb, it was at the gas pedal. I believe I even said that in my initial post.

Not to seem rude or anything but maybe people should read the entire post before making assumptions, as I had already located the problem but did not know how to fix it & was hoping someone else had the same issue.

 Thats why I thought it might be some type of distortion. Doesnt that bolt come from the right side? I might be wrong. Does the gas pedal travel straight inline?

 Wait I think it does come from the left now sorry.

 Maybe some kind of bushing wearing?

have you pushed the pedal while looking at everything under the dash to see what it's catching on? Sounds like the pedal assembly is just worn out.

Im sry I shoulda given you some credit.. I looked & it wasn't bent or anything. I think you are right & there is a worn bushing since I rigged it for now with a zip tie for a spacer.

Uh oh, that is not something I like to hear. Then again 125k miles 25 year old car that was trashed & thrashed before I got it so ya never know. It looked like it was catching on the stud or the bolt head on the stud. Not too sure. I managed to rig it for now with a zip tie as a spacer to keep it off the bolt so the pedal won't stick.
