Source for v8 pinto radiator?
« on: August 03, 2012, 08:22:21 AM »
Got a problem with my existing radiator for my 71' w/289 and can not find one with our dimensions-27.5" wide x 13" tall.  I'm new to these cars and was wondering if there is a radiator from another make/model that fits well.  Jegs has some good deals on universal aluminum ($159) but they're all too tall.  I was looking at one from a late 60's chevrolet c10 that looked close but was way too much $$$.  Any and all advice greatly appreciated- thanks-

Saw the scirocco one too but it seems a little too small...

I had a custom aluminum radiator
made from Griffin Radiator. They can make any size, it came as described and I have no problems with overheating. I think it cost $450 but it looks as good as it works. It really finished off the engine bay.

Electric fans or stock?  I can't believe a lot of them run $1,000+ dollars in the Jeggs catalog.

I am running belt drivenfan (stock) I may upgrade to electric one day. But I have sat in traffic in 95 degree heat and did not overheat. Here is a look at it

I was told by a guy at Carlisle last year to use a radiator from a 69 Mustang. Not sure if it will work ,couldn't hurt to look.

Nice work, and good video.  I have the same color paint, shaker and a lot of the same running gear but not nearly as nice as yours yet.  I've looked at the mustang rad and it would take a little more cutting than I'd like.  Thanks for the replies :)

I'm going to the radiator shop on Mon. and see if any of those guys can I. D. the one that's in there.  It's definetly a stocker out of something.  Otherwise it's a high dollar nice one like Norman's or the Scirocco.  Just not sure if the scirocco one would cool enough but it's priced nice for under $100 for all aluminum at the parts house.

A Scirocco radiator is only good for the dragstrip where you wont be trying to cool the engine in traffic or driving down the highway. It's waaaay too small for anything bigger than a 4 banger as far as actually driving down the road with it. Trust me, I used one in a buggy to cool a built 1.8L & it barely kept that cool running around the woods all day.

I bought a radiator for a factory air Pinto on ebay and it has a wider core than the standard radiator- if you look at the standard rad, one side is part sheet metal from the mounting holes to the core. The AC radiator core goes all the way to the mounts.  Also the top hose tube is angled instead of straight. I think the tank is wider too. It looks like its about the same size as a 65 Mustang 289 rad. to me.

I am running a radiator out of a v8 1972 maverick. It cooled my maverick when it had a 460c.i. in it. It should cool a small block in a pinto . It also fits the stock early pinto core support with a minimum of modification. P.S. It is a two core radiator.
