1980 California Emissions car help
« on: August 09, 2012, 10:58:23 PM »
I recently purchased a 1980 Ford Pinto Station Wagon with California Emissions, Automatic Transmission, and A/C.
Date code on the door jamb sticker is 07/80.
I purchased the car to fix it up and have a nice retro daily driver.
When I purchased the car, I did not realize that so much of the Emissions equipment had been disconnected, and where I live, the car must have all the original emissions equipment to pass the smog test.
So I have purchased many Ford manuals and other publications to try to figure out what needs to be connected where, and what is just missing.
My questions are more about what I may be missing.
First, my exhaust manifold is cracked, so I went searching for one, but I found two possibilities. The exhaust manifold currently on the car has three ports. One is a 90 degree fitting that connects to the EGR Valve via a pipe. The second has a One Way Check Valve attached to curved pipe. And the third hole has an Oxygen Sensor screwed in it.
My first question is in regards to the Oxygen Sensor. Not only is mine unplugged, but there is no wires anywhere on the wiring harness with a plug to plug into the Oxygen Sensor. Did someone not only unplug the wire but then cut the wires from the harness?
Or, did the 1980 California car not have an Oxygen Sensor, and someone changed the exhaust manifold at some time, and put the wrong one on?
Next question is in regards to an Air Pump.
Did the 1980 California Emissions car use an Air Pump?
My car does not have an Air Pump currently.
The curved pipe One Way Check Valve is attached to a Three Way Diverter Valve. The bottom port of the diverter is attached to a pipe that runs parallel to the exhaust pipe, and the front port is plugged.
If my car should have an Air Pump, what else and I missing between the Pump and Three Way Diverter Valve?
I would like to return my car to stock condition, so if anyone knows where I could see photos of a 1980 California Emissions car, or if anyone can help with my questions, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you everyone in advance.

I had a 78 and 79 Pinto with that Calif emission system that Ford called "TWC" wihch stood for 3-way catalyst. Basically it was a crude feedback carburetor with a brain box that would read the oxyegen sensor at cruising speed and apply variable vacuum to the carb and adjust the fuel mixture. When it is working, it works really well, but its complex and a vacuum line nightmare. The best explanation of how it works is in the later version of Chiltons Pinto manual (or maybe Clymers)  If you lose vacuum to the mixture adjustment port on the special carb it defaults to full rich, which means that the car runs fine, but it burns more fuel, and the CO will likely fail the CA smog test.  I learned this the hard way!
I can probably help you, but first does the car have an air tube going down to the middle of the cat converter? Is there an extra metal module under the hood besides the ignition module? or under the dash in the left corner?  If you post a pic of the top of the carb. I can tell you if it is a feedback type.
I do have some underhood pictures of the TWC system, but I no longer have either of the cars.  If you are missing a lot of parts you will probably have a hard time finding them.  Probably your best course is to cobble up the emissions system from a 1977 Calif car or a Federal car.  If you make it look original, and it works, the smog test tech will never know.  They do a visual inspection, but in my experience they don't dig too deep into the details of what should be there.  And yes, I'm pretty sure that it should have an air pump.  On a 1977 or Federal car it just pumps air into the exh manifold, but on the TWC it sent air into the manifold when the engine is cold, and to the middle of the cat when warmed up.
Too much information I know, but I hope it helps!

Thanks to everyone who has responded with help on my 1980 California Emissions car.
I apologize that I forgot to mention I live in Las Vegas, NV though.
I appreciate everyones willingness to help.
In the last few days, since I learned what I have, I found a great website with drawings of where all the emissions items belong under the hood.
The website is www.fordpartsg iant.com.
The website has almost no Ford Pinto parts for sale, but they have links to drawings.
I noticed the site only allows you to pick a 1980 pinto, but many items cross reference to other years.
After you pick the vehicle, then you pick parts categories or subgroups.
When you bring up each subgroup, they have the Ford OEM part numbers listed for each part.
Then, right above the parts listing, they have a link to drawings of that subgroup of parts, that shows the parts and part numbers and where they belong on the car.
I hope this website will be helpful to others.
Thank you again for everyones help.
Joey
