Title: Shipping a used gas tank?
Post by: russosborne on August 30, 2014, 06:52:39 PM
I need some advice. I want to sell my wagon's tank. I am going to be doing something different. I would like to know what I am getting into before listing it for sale.

Anyway, I have no clue about shipping something like that.

My first concern is safety/legality. This is a used tank afterall, and has some serious varnish fumes. It has been sitting in the sun the last couple of days and the smell seems to be lessening, but how do people ship these sorts of things? And what issues do the shippers have with something like this?
I don't have the money to take it and have it boiled out, is there anything I can do for free or extremely cheap to clean it out some that would help?

Packaging? When I bought a new tank for my late lamented Lemans, it just came in a cardboard box with a tiny bit of foam wrapped around the tank. Is that considered ok?

How do you price shipping for something like this? I don't even have a bathroom scale to weigh it.  :-[

Any other things I may not be considering here? If this gets too complicated I will have to just forget about it.

Thanks,
Russ

I wouldn't waste any time until I found someone that was willing to ship that, if they know what it is they most likely will vote to not go there. The liability issues are tremendous.

Hello Russ.
I can tell you from experience not just as a truck driver but as someone who has shipped and received shipments from all over the USA don't even try to ship a used fuel cell of any type.
UPS & FedEx will refuse a package if it has any odor whatsoever. If you did manage to get it packaged and shipped and it was damaged in-route and an odor was detected, by law the driver would need to remove the package from his truck or trailer. It then could be misplaced or even lost.
I was refused shipping on a distributor for my 1952 M-37 Military vehicle and likewise the carburetor simply because "they might still contain contaminates".
The reason your new tank came in a cardboard box is because it had never yet been used to contain fuel. I had one delivered by UPS for a Bronco one time and the box had been destroyed is shipping.
My humble suggestion would be to advertise as "sold as is" picked up at a reasonably close well lit public location, such as a big box store with cameras in their parking lot!
Sorry I can't give you a better report but this is my experience, maybe somebody else has a better idea?

I wouldn't even think about shipping a used fuel tank, pickup only..

I seldom (if ever ?) see a 71 - 73 new tank for sale.
However, I've posted links o new 74 ^ new tanks for sale ...... under $100.00 CDN.

If I were to ship a used tank, I'd have it hot tanked. Then : http://www.por15.com/POR-15-Fuel-Tank-Repair-Kit_p_62.html

I have three 72 tanks. All in good shape, except for the filler seal etc.
Not sure what I'll do with them, as a new aluminum tank is not expensive to have built. I'll have the option of how big, in tank pump etc.

White car has no spare tire hole. The other two will have them removed as well.

Thanks, all. You confirmed my thoughts.
The reason I asked is that I do see them advertised here with shipping as an option and was wondering how? I am the type that WILL get caught. Kharma is a female dog. :-)
If it doesn't sell locally (most likely since Pinto stuff doesn't seem to sell at all here) I will just scrap it along with the rest of the crap.

Hey Russ.
I'll bet if you advertise, somebody will want, and figure out a way to get it!
"Never scrap what you can save". Somebody somewhere needs your "stuff".  :)

I went ahead and put it up for sale here, local pickup only. Have to see what happens. I'd hate to scrap a wagon tank, but I won't have any use for it either.
Thanks,
Russ

you can ship them - used -

i have shipped 2 so far! but you will need to flush them and try to get all fumes washed out - i also wrapped in a plastic wrap to keep any fluids from leaking out and to keep any oder from escaping!  had what is called crash wrap at work - worked great!!

so it can be done but does require some work !!!

I had to get one for my restoration. Truck freight was the only way, not cheap but I needed it! :(
