shifter knob detachment
« on: November 28, 2012, 05:51:56 PM »

So I'm driving down the road and begin to downshift at a stoplight , pulling from 3rd to 2nd when the ENTIRE SHIFTER COMES OUT OF THE TRANS. Leaving me literally waving a shifter bar around the car. Luckily it was in 2nd so I could ease into a Napa auto repair that was right there. We reattached it temporarily but I need a SADDLE ASSEMBLY for it. Any advice/clues? Thx, Leslie

Look here about 7 or 8 posts down `four sped shifter`. Mine used to do that too and the first time it happened I nearly panicked I was on an exit ramp and it was a steep one climbing up. I turned the engine off, and was ready  to leave it over on the side until I saw a police car giving me the eye.It wasnt easy getting that car going in 4th gear up that incline :(

Eventually I got so god at putting it back together, I woulkd just coast over somewhere there was enough light if it was dark, put it together and take off in about a minute or less.

After I had the transmission replaced later it never came out again,I was thinking it was the nylon nut that screws into the transmission, but I guess it wasnt. It could be the saddle or shift rail bushing was missing, or maybe grease on the nylon nut (or in the transmission housing where it screws in) or else the transmission itself in my case. If you get the saddle then you might want to clean that nylon nut and the threads inside the top of the transmission a little too. And let us al know how it turns out.

once you get the shifter nylon nut threaded in make sure that you push down a couple of the tabs on the lock ring or it WILL back out again
the only substitute for cubic inches is BOOST!!!

Hey, friends, I found the bushing piece for the shifter assembly and had it put in.  3 weeks later the shifter is unscrewed again. Per advise I got iy screwed back in and 1-4 gears are great. However, can't get it in reverse at all. I read a great post by Dave1987 about switching shifter to Mustang ii, trouble is I'm concerned about the no reverse thing. What should I be looking at in terms of trouble shooting?  Thanks!
