Title: setting crank?

my 79 wagon had the timing belt go a few days ago. im working on putting a new one on but i cant figure out what part on the crank needs to line up with the marker. im not seeing any dots or marks or anything to line up. can anyone shed some light on it, maybe even a picture?been doing research all morning and looking on the car and getting nowhere really. any help is greatly appreciated.

On the crank sprocket just to the right of the keyway should be a small dot or an arrow that lines up with that notch in the block thats just past the 1 o'clock position.

Yeah, the pulley & the washer behind it. The mark will be on the gear.
 
The cam pulley has a dot or a slash that lines up with that little pointer at the 7 o'clock position. I think it's 7 o'clock roughly.
 
 Then take the distributor cap off & turn the auxilliary shaft gear till the rotor points to the number one plug wire on the cap & put the belt on.
 
Loosen the tensioner bolt(not the spring bolt) & use a pry bar to release pressure on the tensioner while you slip the belt behind it & then release the tensioner & it will set itself. Then tighten the bolt back up & rotate the engine a few times & check all your alignments & make sure the marks & rotor still line up & you're done.
 
Once it's running you still want to set the timing at the distributor to specs.

I dug up a couple pix. Here's the crank marks lined up.

Here's how to line the cam up running a string between the bolts. I've always just used the mark but this is easy to do. It's at 5 o'clock, not 7...... My bad  :P

what do you mean by set the timing at the distributor afterwards? Thanks for the pictures thats very helpful

Timing is broken down into two different parts. Cam timing, and ignition timing. When you set the timing on the car you also need to set the ignition timing to specs so the ignition fires a spark at the right time. You will need a timing gun in order to set the ignition timing.

just like r4 said. Cam timing is what you are setting by replacing the belt. Chances are the auxilliarry gear will now be off a tooth & you need to set the ignition timing by loosening the distributor hold down bolt (11/16") & time the engine. The decal on the valve cover tells you your timing specs. If you don't have a timing light borrow one. I'm not sure if Autozone has loaners but they may.

You might also check the cam and valve locations as well IE valves on #1 are up and the cam markings lined up.

so new problem. got it all back together and running. drove it about 3 miles before i saw some smoking. i pulled over and checkd it out and noticed a loose hose. fixed it and kept going. another mile and still smoking under the hood but hoped it was just burning off the leaked coolant, i looked in my mirror and saw a huge white cloud behind me. i got it towed this afternoon and we checked the oil and it had none (had an oil change 2 weeks ago) and no coolant. im thinking head gasket but idk. any ideas?

head gasket or cracked head. Could also have bad rings if it has no oil or a very severe oil leak. To be honest I would plan on rebuilding the engine if you are out of both coolant & oil.

Oooof..... I'm thinking this may be what caused the timing belt to break in the 1st place.

alright so im kinda dum. it stopped running because the tensioner loosend up and caused the timing to jump. the cloud of smoke was just the coolant dripping down and burning off teh exhaust making it look like it came from the muffler. so i got it all tightened up, got the timing as right as i could figure and got it to start again (did use that time to clean and paint some parts). But ive got this knock now. i put more oil in and taht didnt help at all. the knowcking is only in the last bit of giving it gas and only while driving not when parked. any ideas before i give in and take it to a pro.

I would check the cam timing & ignition timing just to make sure it is correct. It almost sounds like a spark knock. Not too sure without seeing the car in person. Would be a good place to start though. When you set the ignition timing with the timing light did you unhook the vacuum advance & plug the vacuum line? Also what did you set the ignition timing at?

i just had it a little bit off on the distributor. got it running and am driving it again, although i am babying it a bit for now. thanks for all the great help guys
