Would someone please photograph the underside of both seats and post. I asked my mechanic to remove seats and trade places. This is to even out the wear. Drivers seat is the only one that is used. It is starting to have problems. I want to save what is remaining before it starts to show. The passenger seat has no wear at all. I want it to take future use.
My mechanic says they won't fit if I trade places. I asked other members here and was told they will just bolt in. Please be kind enough to show me why this will of will not work.

One issue that I can think of and it possibly would depend on the year is the hook that catches the shoulder belt when the seat flops forward. Also the latch to release the seat to flop forward would be to the inside of the seats instead of the outside where you can reach them. With out measuring I would say they will change and bolt to the floor but it is more the issues with the back over the bottoms. On mine there was as much wear on the back as the bottom. Just my thoughts.

Your car is a newer model than my '73 but but IF the seat mounts are the same I struggle to see why they won't swap. That said in '74 the Pinto went to the the Mustang II type platform and there may be a difference. As mentioned above there are the smaller issues of tilt and belt catchment mechanisms . There may also be issues with the seat belt buzzer detector plug. A mechanic my be hesitant to do the swap because of liability.
You may have the option of having an upholsterer swap the cover portion of the seat but leaving the frames where they are. But given the location of the mentioned attachments there may be small holes as the material swap sides.

Thank you for your thoughts. I am not concerned with anything other than the lineup of bolt down pattern. The mechanic said the frames had different bends. I said in that case, take the seats off the frames and switch that way. He said the underside of the seat was not flat and would not fit the contour of the frame. For whatever reason I think he is feeding me BS

get an new "mechanic" .
not sure about latet years but the seats in my 73 wagon are identical except for the seatback release knobs. the bolt patterns are the same and all the metal parts are the same. the seatback release knbs can be reversed but you would need to lift the upholstery on the seat back tonget access.
like you my driver seat gets most of the wear and the passenger seat gets none so i have been contemplating switching them out.
your post prompted me to do it and as i mentioned they bolted right in..
unexpected benefit.... i found the 50 yr old reminant of my build sheet wedged into the spring under the seat.. you may find yours as well..
also a good opportunity to vacuum out all the stuff collecting under the seat and retrieve some lost cash.

I have a pair of front seats from a '77 Pinto and they are not universal. They have a recess for the trans tunnel and can not interchange between sides.

I am planning to install carpet replacement in the next couple of days, so I will be taking pictures of the project. I will keep in mind to do the seat tracks, floor pan, seat belt bolts, and sleeves to help you out as well.
