Need new carb advice
« on: August 22, 2018, 04:09:11 PM »
My 1980 Pony SE with the 2.3 needs a new carb. Previous owner(s) did some weird sheet in a de-smog attempt. There are vacuum diaphragm assemblies missing from the front, the choke no workee, gets seriously awful mileage, the list goes on. I’m thinking of ordering a Weber 32/36 with the electric choke. It is about $250 with adaptor. Also offered with a new intake and air filter assembly for about $450.

I want your thoughts. Any issues bolting up the linkage. Mines a 4-speed so no kick down to worry about. Any and all advice appreciated.

Thanks.

I think a lot will depend upon the smog laws in your state. You might be required to use the factory carb (unaltered) to pass the test.  Check there first.

Smog laws?  We don’t have no steenking smog laws. No tests. No nothing. So with that in mind, back to my original question...

Sorry I can't help there. I run a EFI turbo engine in my '73 Pinto wagon. I know this has come up frequently. You might try a search as traffic here is pretty light.

As to the smog laws..., here in California all 1976 and newer Pinto's (all gas powered cars for that matter) need to pass a smog test every two years. It is both visual and functional. Unless a replacement carb. has been officially accepted the car will fail. So, be thankful if you don't have that concern.
