ive just went through a very difficult trial and error learning experience with this.  you are shooting for 34-36 total.  factory settings for initial are around 6-8 but more is ok.  i have finally gotten mine to 10 initial and 36 total.

What problems are you having?  do you have a dial back timing light or a standard?  have you checked timing yet? what do you have currently WITHOUT vacuum advance?

Not sure how savvy you are with the distributors but if you cannot get a decent curve they can be taken apart and the advance range changed by changing to different sized slots.  For my 1980 with duraspark distributor, 16L with a bushing on it turned out to be the magic number.  There are detailed instructions posted in other forums i can direct you to if need be.  You may not need to go this far though if you have a decent curve already.

It's dying when we try to Lower it but I didn't take the vacuum advance off... Would that do it?

Are you running ported vacuum or full manifold vacuum?, what is your timing set at now?, is the carb dialed in?, we need some info in order to diagnose anything..

sounds like you are trying to time by ear?  what number did you lower it to?  why are you changing it in the first place?

Timing 'by ear' is a lost art. Go to Autozone. Buy a dial-back timing light. Once and done. :)

Also vacuum caps. You have to 'disconnect' the vacuum line to set the initial timing, so that requires plugging the feed.  A vacuum leak will mess up your idle, and throw off your timing.

Timing has to be done with the engine hot enough to burn you. Like a radiator hose burns you. Preferably the upper, but what do I know. :) rofl

Ya I think my carb needs work... I can't get it to idle at all.. I'm doing it cuz I just rebuilt engine.

Idk. I point my rotor at the mark on the dizzy, and the car starts. Adjust it a few degrees further, and now we're idling. Has to be hot, though.

At a loss for the later POS motors. :D
