I have the 74 manual, and I think I did it on my 79 back several years ago, but I am not quite sure about the upper curved over part. I think when I did it before I might have damaged it, and would like to not do that this time, so any advice appreciated.

Yes, it does need to come off, for reasons I am not quite ready to discuss.  ;D let's just say I need the metal plate bare for now.

Thanks,
Russ

There should be a couple bolts or screws at the bottom holding it on.  Once they are removed, it should just slide up and off.

Ok, that is what the service manual implied.
I just wanted to double check first.
Thanks!

Seems like it was as easy as said there, I did mine years ago, the '80 was a totally plastic plate with no steel except brackets, I went Junkyard scouring to find the earlier stouter all metal plate. Cover comes off easy IIRC.

I don't have the rear seat at all, dumped it. Let plate come down flat and with two flaps outboard of the drive tunnel hanging from front of plate then makes an excellent double cubbie hole to quickly hide things you want in car but nobody busting window to get at them. Out of sight, out of mind.......... ....planning someday to raise plate vertical and build say clear plexi higher up to make an interior divider to make a/c work much better as well. No need to waste a/c cooling back of wagon there, I treat it like a truck.

That is about the same as what I am going to be doing.
Thanks,
