removing 78 pinto door glass
« on: July 30, 2012, 09:12:09 PM »
can anybody tell me how to remove the glass from the doors of a 78 pinto. I spent tonight looking at it and it looks like i might have to drill out some rivets to get the glass out. I read an ehow article that mentions pushing retainer pins and securing screws, I cant find any pins or screws. any help is appreciated.

this is the article i mentioned but cant understand.

May I ask why you want to risk busting the door glass if it isn't broken already? and even if it isn't broken, why you want to (need to) remove it?  sounds like making more work than you need to.

That's about what my Haynes says, but it adds: "On later models the rivet heads will also have to be drilled out with a 1/4 inch (6mm) drill."

The early stuff:

the drivers window is chipped and neither window crank is operating correctly even when oiled. one crank has alot of sisde to side play in it and that makes it hard to operate. the doors also have surface rust inside and out and some dents so i planned on cleaning them out, pounding out dents and repainting the inside so i dont end up with rusted out doors later on. I'd just feel safe with the glass out especially since the rubber tracks are gone and the glass rattles against the metal whenever the car or door is moved.

1/4 inch drill took the rivets right out. i thought there would be a way to get them out without removing the rivets but they are out of the car now and safely packed away where they wont be rattling around anymore.
