rear shocks
« on: March 05, 2020, 04:48:41 PM »
Hi, I need some help trying to figure out what type of rear shocks on my 76 station wagon. I have parts from 3 different pintos and all the rear shock upper mounts are the same. Trouble is my car is different. The upper mount has only 2 studs fixed to the body not the 3 holes for the typical mount. I cannot find any shocks that will mount to this type of set up, i'm sure it's factory because it doesn't look altered. Any help would be very useful. Thanks, Dale

Let me do some research   :)
If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?

The shocks on both of my cruising wagons have two studs or maybe two bolts (?) but there is no plate with three mounting holes. Must be just for non-wagons. So are you saying there are no shocks available? Because l don't see any listed for a wagon on RockAuto!!

I did find a set of shocks that will work, they are used but are in workable condition. Mine is a wagon but I can't find any new shocks listed anywhere except the one's listed for the mounts that require the brackets. That's ok, I don't think I will ever drive the car enough to where out the shocks.

Back in the day.....a long, long time ago (LOL) I could and did, go to parts stores & give them the stroke & pin/eye measurements & get shocks that worked.

Do at your own risk but I used the regular sedan shocks and just used spaces to "center" the shocks on my wagon. Damper wise I don't know the difference but the length I believe is about 2" longer. The spacers made up about 1-1/2" and the rest I have never noticed. Note that I only show this on the bottom but I did it at the top too.

Most shock manufacturers have the shock end and travel length listed on their websites. Perhaps you can find something that way.

Late 70's Camaro shocks work. They are about 2 1/2 inches longer, but compressed length is
 about the same.

I think l'm going to use an Explorer 8.8 rear end with disc brakes so l'll probably have to fab something but those might still work. Thanks for the info
