was just looking at rear leaf spring mount. i need some lift in rear of car, as i have 275/60 15's (28.1" tall) on 10" rims. there is 2 bolts that attach spring hanger to frame rail. why couldnt i just put a "block" between the spring hanger assembly, and the frame to gain my necesary lift..????? ;D
p.s. if i can do it , i would also put shock extenders on..

Any change to the height at that end will necessitate a change in pinion angle as well. Just some food for thought.

Better think that out more. the connection there swings backwards and forward, a block will try to move around too. It has to be screwed positively to the frame. And not enough material there to do that. Why the bolts run sideways.

im not looking for 5" of lift, prolly just 1-2"...

Just make longer shackles. Easy to make.

Longer shackles like said. I have an idea in my head of how most leaf packages attach, may not be right on that one.

i think hes talking about the mount that bolts to the frame with 4 bolts that the shackle bolts to
brad :)

Could be and where I was going, used to the shackle on most simply coming directly off the frame rail there.

ok, heres the plan, wish i could show pix. on the rear most portion of frame rail, there are four bolts(per side) and a curved bracket that hold the bumper "shocks"to the rail . On top of that the leaf spring shackle "mounts" are attached with 2 seperate bolts. what if i unbolted all 6 bolts......bol ted a spacer block on top of the bumper shock bracket(rebolted it back down.....drill ed 2 holes into it(the block), then rebolt the shackle mount to the newly installed "block"? that would give me my lift, keep the stock shackles....an d i think a good way to get a little lift without spending 5-$600 on custon springs.. ;D

Just to clarify, your spacer is going between the bumper shock bracket and the shackle bracket ("on top" gets confusing for me when looking at something upside down). If staying in the 1" to 2" range, I believe your spacer method would provide better lateral support for cornering loads than longer shackles. By spacer I am picturing a metal block with a large foot print size (as you referenced) and not just a stack of washers (just in case somebody else tries to take this too far).

Just buy longer shackles.
Also, remember, 1" of additional height at one end of the spring results in 1/2" of an increase in height of that end of the car.

Put 2 inch longer shackles on my Suburban and it only moved the axel 1 inch. You would be better off with air shocks.

is exactly where ill be working. i too think it will give the lift i require, without the dangers of longer shackles.

Plain and simple,it will take a 4" thick block to make the rear end be 2" higher. If fact it will be closer to 1 1/2" as the axle is closer to the front spring eye, and will not move as far. Middle school math will show you why.

They were on the Datsun B210 my buddy bought a few years ago. Rear end was jacked way up. He drilled holes as far up as he could and cut them off, the car looked so stupid at first.

Back in the early 70's a guy I knew had a set on his 60 Ford. They're must have been a foot of shackle between the bolts. Thinking back, I'd swear his leaves arched the wrong way. It really set the car off with those stock G78-14 tires...LOL!!!
My 73 has some out back & the springs do arch the wrong way. I need to remember to take some pics before I tear it apart

i would go with air shocks - had them in my wagon and they worked well and gave me about a 1-2" lift and good ride!

where did u get airshocks for a pinto? i dont see them listed anywhere. did you crossreference them from a different car..???? ???
