Title: REAR AXLE QUESTION
Post by: popbumper on December 14, 2015, 05:02:39 PM
Hi guys:

I have been in the process of restoring a stock Pinto ('78" rear axle to replace the 6.75" on my wagon. Everything has been sandblasted and painted with POR-15, and chassis black. It all needs reassembled (I bought a rebuild kit with bearings and such).

HOWEVER - QUESTIONS:

The axles are obviously 4-lug. I would like to go to 5-lug:

  a) HAS ANYONE SUCCESSFULLY HAD A FOUR LUG AXLE REDRILLED FOR FIVE LUG?

  b) OR, ARE THERE ANY OTHER FORDS THAT HAVE STOCK FIVE LUG AXLES THAT ARE "PLUG AND PLAY" FOR THIS REAR END?
(same length, bearing size, splines, backing plates, only five lug)

SUGGESTIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS PLEASE! Thanks you.

Chris

Chris,

Which rear are you using? Sorry, I got confused.

Either way odds are you will have to have the axle flange redrilled. I haven't done it but I know there were lots of people doing it on the Mustang II forum I used to be on.

I don't think there are any stock 5 lug axles for the Pinto 6.75 and I am positive there are none for the Pinto/Mustang II 8 inch rear. I posted a link in the FAQ section about ordering 5 lug axles for the 8 inch Pinto/II rear. Might be easier to swap in an 8 from a 65ish Mustang. You just have to modify the spring perch on those.

Russ:

I am using the 8" rear. I wrote a local axle place and they said they would not redrill them. I want to stick with the Pinto setup - want this to be "plug and play" - so maybe I'll just have to stay four lug. The rear housing is already restored/repainted so I don't want to do any cutting/welding/what not. Thanks.
