RE: 74 Pinto Wagon Wiring
« on: September 22, 2016, 11:17:29 AM »
To all, I just recently purchased a 74 Pinto Wagon that had a 2.3 motor. The gentleman I purchased the car from removed the motor and cut a few wires. I figured out the starter solenoid wires but there is a 3 prong female connector on the drivers side of the car that I can't figure out. He states that the car had a Crane cam module on it but I've checked several parts stores and 74 doesn't seem to have an ignition module. They show that year model had a points distributor. I wish I could post a picture. The connector has 3 female, two of them are stacked on top of each other and the other is by itself with a blank stuck in the middle. If anyone could help out it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Don

Congratulation s on the new Pinto.  Looking at a 1974 Pinto wiring diagram, that connector appears to be for the "starter interlock override reset switch", connector #C-126.  There is a eleven wire module named "actuator assembly seat belt and ignition warning system" in series with the transmission gear selection switch interlocking the starter.  Just guessing "starter interlock override reset switch" may bypass the module if it is not working properly.  My wiring diagram has a error so above guess may not be correct.

Is this connector under the hood, or in the interior of the car? You just mention "drivers side." Knowing the area the wiring "reaches" to can help narrow down the possibilities.  Also if you could provide the colors of the wires it would be helpful since schematics list by wire color and not connector shape (though the picture is very helpful.).  List the predominant color first and then striped color second. Also be specific if the color is light or dark. That gets tricky because pinks might look red, light green might look yellow-ish etc.  From there we can hopefully better assist you.

My 74 wiring diagrams fortunately do show connector shapes, see scan below (C-126).  It shows the wire colors as follows:
white wire with pink hash marks going to the ignition switch and that seat belt module
red wire with light blue stripe going to the starter solenoid
red wire with yellow hash marks which eventually goes to positive 12V at fuse #6

As Wittsend said wire colors can be a challenge to determine, especially after 40 years of heat and grime.  My wiring diagram does not show what is inside that seat belt module, so no way for me to determine what it does.  The photo below is from ebay for a 1974 Pinto.  The switch is located on the top middle of the driver side inner fender (red button).

Okay guys, your replies were very helpful and the connector is the diagram C-126 as Old Kayaker has shown. The connector though is on the drivers side of the car and not on the passenger side but I guess it would be from what position you would be standing. Obviously, if your standing in front it's on your right side. Question is do I need it, and the car doesn't appear to have an ignition module as later models had. I'm guessing that this was a points type distributor. Any other opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Don

Don't need it unless your state laws mandate it I took mine off since it was bypassed anyways and didn't work. They did have points which was the first thing I got rid of, I put a Duraspark in with an HEI module, I gutted a factory box and hid the module in it so it looked all factory..

Thanks. This confirms my suspicions. I bought this car as rolling chassis and am going to put a small block in the engine compartment. I've had this aluminum headed 289 with the MII bellhousing and flywheel and C4 trans. I have no intentions of cutting this car up and would like to make a neat grocery getter. As for the cut wires I'm sure I can just repair them. Really appreciate everyones help. Don

Any way you could give me a side view of the coil. I found two more black wires that have been cut next to where the coil would have been. One is solid black the other black with a white stripe. The red wire has a fork style connector which I'm going to assume is for the coil. I think the original slip on type is gone.

Getting back to the solenoid wires which we have already determine which ones are which, there is a fat light brown/tan that is also cut. I'm going to include pictures to try and make it easy. Sorry for all the question but I've been used to working on the very early models which were quite simple. Sorry for all the questions but you all have been a great help. Thanks, Don

Sorry, never took any pics of the stock ignition, just have some of the conversion to electronic, I'm sure some here has some though..

Don't know if this helps but this is the only pic I have of the solenoid.

Thanks, That picture helped out immensely. It showed me where that brown wire that has the terminal cut off goes on the starter solenoid.  ;D. All I need to do is put a connector on it.

Make sure you have the two little wires that go to right place. If you switch them the starter wount turn over. No big deal! Just switch them and all will be ok. The other little wire send 12V to the coil to help the start with a point dist.
Its better to be a has-been, than a never was.
