Title: Rack and pinion help
Post by: mallen on June 27, 2014, 09:46:28 PM
When I went to order my rack and pinion for my 1979 pinto they ask me for the measurement of the input shaft... I believe my choices were 1 1/4" ..2" or 2 1/4" is that the length of the input shaft they are referring to??

I'm thinking power rack vs. manual. The input shafts are a different diameter. I don't know the sizes for the later years as I have two early cars.

I would think a 2 1/4" diameter input shaft would be huge.. But maybe your right.. I didn't want to pull it out before I got the new one in.. I think I'll put it out and measure around on it... Thanks for the reply

I think they need the length of the shaft.

That sounds like the splined shaft that connects to the rag joint. Some are longer depending on what year the rack is from. Most racks they sell are Fox body Mustang parts which usually fit.

Dunno if it runs that far back but through the late '80s and early '90s Ford flirted a lot with two suppliers of racks, TRW and official Ford ones, while they both follow same basic design lots of times the parts did not interchange, and why the parts books often ask the question, 'TRW, or Ford'? And with no identifying marks on racks to proclaim which maker. It could be a headache.
