Title: Questions for an ac man - 77PINTO
Post by: righthandman on August 16, 2012, 02:33:05 PM
Hi Guys,
The ac compressor on my car blow up. I bought a rebuilt one to put on in its place. OK these "York" compressors have a oil fill/drain plug on each side that on the new one are labeled add oil here, but does not say of what kind or how much. Then in the instructions that came with the new one says to add half of the oil in the suction side of the compressor and the other half of the oil is to be put equally into the other ac parts. The instructions again do not say anything about what kind or how much oil (half of what).
First question is " is the oil in the crankcase part of the compressor mix with the freon and run in the system"? and if not how much oil should be in crankcase?
Secondly is there a way I can clean the system myself before I take it to have it vacuumed and recharged?
I forgot to mention this car has already been changed to 134a.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

You can buy a small bottle of 134 oil. Compressor in level position remove 9/16 bolt check with small rod you want to fill oil to 3/4" . Yes system must be flushed and new reciever dryer installed along with condenser  it is very fine tubing and can not be cleaned out. Total of oil in system should be 10 oz .   Fred

Thanks Fred for the help, but I must say I am still very confused. This is only the second air condition repair I have been involved with in my life and the other one I screwed up. This time I want to try and get it right. No. 1  Is the crankcase a separate part from the cooling system its self or is the oil that I put in there a part of the 10 oz. total you mentioned?
You mentioned using a small rod to measure the oil and the unit being level. No. 2 That is 3/4" on the bottom of the stick when it is setting level as on a V-6. Right! Or is that standing like on the 4 cyl.? And finally No. 3 if the crankcase uses a different kind of oil what does it use?     Thanks again,   TOM

On an a/c system there is not a seperate crankcase. The oil you add to the a/c is the only oil you put in. As the oil & refrigerant circulates through the a/c system it lubricates the compressor.

You want to read 3/4" high on dip stick using 134 oil this oil is part of your 10 ounces. I can usually tell when pulling vac. down if there is a leak. Some times I get a hard to find one so I fill system with propane way cheaper than 134.   Fred     :)
