Title: Priming 2.0 oil system
Post by: rramjet on October 02, 2013, 08:27:18 PM
I want to prime the oil system and verify proper oil through the new oil spray tube before starting the engine with a new cam, followers and oil spray tube.

Anyone know what size the oil pump shaft is or have another way to do it?

You will need long hex wrench to instal in elec. drill, other wise weld one to a bolt. Check bottom of dist. to get size.  Fred   :)

Lubricate cam with a good engine-building pre-lube (I used Lucas) before install, change oil with fresh oil and filter, and dump 1/4 quart of whatever your preferred oil is over the valvetrain before you button it up.

No worries. :) If the bottom end was oiled before hand, it'll pump back up before it even tried to start. If you're that worried, pull the coil wire off the coil (ease of access).

If it's a new cam you want oil flowing before you fire it, use a break in oil for the Zinc. I use a junk distributor to make a primer tool.

Got Comp Cam lube on the cam now. Will be changing oil to Brad Penn 10/30 high Zinc and Wixs filter. Still want to see oil comimg out of the spray tube.

I'm a  little anal because I have another car with a SBC and a bad cam. I didn't build it so don't know what was done at break-in.

I'll take a look at the old distributor I have for it.

Brad Penn is the old Kendall green best stuff as far as I'm concerned, they also have a Break in oil that has extra Zinc and is 30wt which should be used instead of multi viscosity for break in. If you have a junk distributor just take the gear off and gut it, you can use a drill motor on the shaft to run it, I made some for Chevy too.

I would look for the oil supply too, I've seen one head that had carburized oil in the towers to provide zero to the cam. Had to clean passages out with a drill bit, the oil was solid as epoxy. Overheat can do that.

Like they say, best oil pumping tool is an old distributor with gear teeth gone/ground off. We cut the top off and just left shaft sticking out to hook drill up to. Just lower part that goes in the hole and enough shaft to get the job done, you can cut off the bigger part at top and more room to work then.

I made this for the Chevy, I put a nut on it too so if a drill motor isn't handy you can use a speed handle, works good. Guess I'll have to make one for the 2.3 and 2.0.

Thanks. I had planned on hanging on to the old distributor since there really wasn't anything wrong with it other than a bad vacuum advance but maybe repurposing it to a priming shaft is more than I would have ever done with it anyway.

I'd look for a junker myself, keep the good one for a spare in the trunk.

Yep, make your tool I did in the 80's and I still have it.

I seldom get rid of anything that seems useful. Ask my wife.

I still have a home made tool for removing push rod tubes from Corvair engines to change the oil seals when I was playing with them back in the late 70's.

Well I ended taking the old distributor apart for the shaft and it did the job. Got lots of oil through all the holes in the oil tube. Kept all the parts so I can put it back together if I ever need it. By the way a deep 5/8" socket fits the lobes perfectly to hook a drill motor up.

That's cool to know... :)
