Power to manual steering.

I am pondering the idea for switching from power to manual steering in my 79 wagon with the 2.8. The idea is floating around due to the fact my steering rack went out and it seems almost impossible to find a rack that actually fits and is $600+. Any suggestions and what does it take to make the switch?

You change the rack, the steering coupler that connects to the rag joint and remove the pump and lines from the engine.  I don't remember on the V6 but on the 2.3 that entailed changing some of the pulley's and brackets for the front accessories.  It is not too bad in my opinion.

I did the swap the other way around a couple of years ago. I bought
a new( probably re-man) power rack from Autovalue Auto Parts for
less than 200.00. O'Rilies had the same part for almost the same $.
I had a doner car for the rest, and I could have put the used rack in
but I went with the new.

I have everything from a wrecked low mileage manual 80 to replace the power steering in my 76 wagon. All you need is the rack & coupler. Any pulley set from a non power steering 2.3 powered car will work on the engine.
