power steering swap
« on: March 04, 2014, 06:28:12 PM »
I have a 72 Pinto and I have access to a 79 Pinto for parts. The 79 has power steering. I would like to put the power steering on my 72 and just needed to know if will fit?

It wont fit. 71-73 cars have a different rack and pinion than the 75-80  cars. The bolt holes don't line up.

Pintoguy76 hit it on the head. There is no way to put a late rack on an early car. The late PS pump wont bolt to a 1.6L or 2.0L either.

It is not a bolt on as mentioned above.  With some significant fabrication, it can be added.  A few years ago, fordmastertech did this for his customer's 1973, see link.  He used a Mustang II rack which I suspect is the same as the 79 Pinto rack.  He also swapped in a 2.3 turbo engine which had a stock power steering pump attached.  Unfortunately the photo links no longer work, but I saved most of the photos to a WORD file.  If interested, pm me your email address and I will send file.

Thanks for the replies. I just thought since I had the 79 here I would swap it out if it would fit. Again I appreciate the help
