Title: Pinto Made Into Trailer (?)
Post by: James Meter on June 03, 2013, 10:14:23 PM
I have the option of getting a 2nd Pinto to steal it's front clip for mine...but I kind of am thinking about making the rear 2/3rds into a pull-behind car trailer-thing.

Options: '77 Stallion Wagon (no bubble window, glass sided)
              '75 Runabout

In both cases, I'd probably weld it all up, then cut either of 'em at the mid-door for better weight distribution over the axle (but sill good space inside.) Then in the part where it's cut off, have a decent sized window to see through to the behind of the thing using the hatch glass.

I'm leaning toward the wagon so that I would have the option to make the top removable for my '80 Honda motorcycle, but still be able to have the top for camping or hauling stuff. I'd make all the windows sheet metal painted black (illusion of tinted glass) with the exception of the hatch that could be taken off with the top...kind of like a well-made camper shell! The floors would be made flat (no more tranny!) and the rear seat may stay in just for drive-ins or the kids to ride/sit in(?). The lump for the spare & spot for the gas tank would probably be cut out/covered over with a toolbox/ramps underneath-accessible only from the topside/inside of the trailer.

With the Runabout, I'd probably leave it as-is and just use it as a hatch-back for smaller cargo. I'd remove the rear seat, lay down metal to make it all flat, then use outside access doors for the empty space beneath the new cargo floor. The spot where the gas tank would have been will be replaces by a decent size tool box/emergency kit.

I kinda think it's be sort of cool to do...and I love to make my own shiznit. :)

ALL thoughts are welcome.

My husband and I are restoring a 1979 Pinto and were lucky enough to find a 1978 parts car for the interior among other needed parts.  We removed the engine, glass along with the rusty front fenders.  All that is setting on our driveway now is a Ford Pinto shell.  We thought about selling what was left until I got the idea of making it into a trailer.
Now, what is so amazing is, everything you talked about doing with the windows, transmission hump etc, is EXACTLY what I had in visioned.
My car is going to be painted Kandee Apple Metallic Blue with purple, gold, pink and blue graphics.  I would paint my little "Pinto" trailer the same.
I think a "Pinto" trailer would be GREAT.
