73 Wagon caliper and rotors to 74-80 type?
« on: February 23, 2014, 10:03:13 AM »
I need to replace the calipers and rotors on my 73 wagon. The rotors for the 73 are $120 plus and the ones for a 74 are around $40. The only difference I can see in the rotors is the thickness.
The question is will the 74 and newer calipers mate with the 73 front axles and make the swap easy with just a change in calipers and rotors or are there other issues?

I (kind of) feel your pain.  When I found out the rotor cost  I snagged a decent pair at Pick Your Part for $10 each. I only say this (not to make you feel bad) but to alert anyone with the earlier cars to get them (cheap) while you can.  And judging by the lack of Pinto's in the yards recently there is little time left!

Late rotors will work on early spindles using early calipers if you put them in a brake lathe & turn down the thickness to that of 71-73 rotors. There is plenty of meat to do it & used late rotors would be perfect candidates to turn down. Pintony did it & there is a thread here someplace. It's actually quite simple. The only thing that comes into play are the thicker hub on late rotors that means early wheels wont fit without opening them up & there is a minor (3/8" I think) width difference with late rotors.
