Bad news there is no ID or engine seral number on these engines , the only parts that can give any idea of what year the engine came out of is the carb or sometimes a tag on the distributor for smog emissions , you may find a number stamped on the carb someplace if the tag on top is missing , as for a kit car most were made off the donor car and the kit number and donor car paper work was brought to the DMV to make a new vin number for the car , it will vary state to state , here in Mississippi you bring the car to DMV for inspection and all the parts you brought to make the car and they stamp in a vin number for you and give you a title for it , if you know the brand of kit car you may try and call them and see if they have a place that is meant to stamp a vin number , if they are still in buesness , last you may have to find a wrecked or very rusty pinto or mustang that had the 2.3 and buy it for paper work , and a bill of sale for the kit itself and take it to dmv to finish it ,my last kit car was a gazelle back in the mid 80s, it was unfinished and also used a pinto engine , I was living in new Orleans then and DMV rules were the same here , I guess this is the info your looking for , let us know , later Blaine

If they give you a hard time about a number being needed, just try using a casting number (not sure where that is, but at least it is a "number" to satisfy them). What I don't get is vehicles get "rebuilt" parts all the time and who follows all those part numbers officially???
