Original gas tank color?
« on: February 20, 2017, 05:34:03 AM »
Hi,
I just wanted to verify that the original factory gas tank on a 72 Runabout was black?  I believe the tank I pulled from mine is original, and it is painted black.  Installing a new Spectra tank and would like to make it look as original as possible.

Thanks,
Richard

Not sure on a 72 but my 77 was plain zinc plated, no paint.

My 72 has the original tank and it's zinc plated.

My 80 Pinto was zinc plated. Never seen a painted one. Racers sometimes paint them white to reflect heat off the track.
Its better to be a has-been, than a never was.

Thinking this over I bet your car was undercoated. If it was they simply sprayed over the tank also, thus it looks like it was painted black. :)

Thanks to all the replies, glad I read this before painting the tank today!  Maybe I will just use the rattle can clear coat to protect the tank since I've already cleaned off the oil film or whatever was on it from Spectra.
