Title: Ordering a carb kit - Wrong year carb
Post by: JohnW on October 05, 2011, 07:15:35 PM
So I went onto AutoZone's site and for the 1980 year, they listed a kit for the D9xx series 5200s.  But my tag is D6EE BA.  I went into 1976 and found it.  The kits have different shape gaskets:
1976: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Gp-Sorensen-Carburetor-Kit/1976-Ford-Pinto/_/N-invt5Z8vd1z?counter=1&itemIdentifier=60694_4034_11836_
1980: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Gp-Sorensen-Carburetor-Kit/1980-Ford-Pinto/_/N-im35dZ8vd1z?counter=2&filterByKeyWor d=carb+kit&fromString=search&itemIdentifier=3499_23055_11836_

What would that extra bit sticking out on the 1980 one be for?  Should I just trust the tag and get the one that matches it?  I'm guessing someone slapped the wrong year carb on the car at some point.  Anyone know the difference in the function of them, like choke differences and whatnot?

Also, my car appears to have a water choke with an electric heater if I remember correctly.  I'll have to get a look tomorrow.  Shouldn't a stock '80 carb have an electric choke with no water lines?

What year of car ? The 1976 Pinto had an water choke the 1977 and about had an all electric choke....
See if you have water lines going to the choke if not some updated for you. By all means use the carb kit for the 1976 or take the carb in and match it.
The 1980's had a weird almost but not quite fuel injector carb,  it had alot more hard vacuum lines going every where....At least the CA cars did..

It's an electric heated water choke.  I guess someone swapped in an earlier motor - I don't know why you'd purposely install the water choke.  I ordered the 1976 kit and down the road I'm gonna convert it to an electric choke.  The fewer water lines, the better.

The later carbs have a solenoid on the carb top the earlier carbs do not have. Standard has a kit that contains the gaskets for both the early and late carbs.

I figured this out yesterday as I have my 76 carb and a pretty rough 79 as a spare.  Took the 79 partially apart and stole the electric choke from it.  Rebuilt the carb last night and today, rerouted my water lines, put the electric choke on, and tuned it.  Unfortunately the Napa kit didn't come with a power valve, so I'll have to pick that up this week and put it in.  The car already runs a lot smoother though.

The Napa kit also came with 2 identical gaskets for some reason.  Did not have the later style one, the kit was specifically for 76 and older.

So have you got it to work?

Yep, runs fine.  Didn't help power much, but it made it a lot less jumpy on partial throttle.  Now to find a new power valve...none of the parts stores seem to carry it.

I have yet to find a kit that comes with a power valve for a holley 5200/weber 32/36, I'd love to find one though.

I need to rebuild the carb on my 78 (D8EE-ATA holley 5200), but O'Reilly's is the only place that has it and it is $52 shipped (special order). :(

I'll try to get one up when I'm back at school tomorrow or monday, I have one on my computer there.

The kits at Napa are around $32 and the AutoZone ones are even cheaper.  Have you tried there?  Or is the ATA carb hard to find kits for?

Yeah, it seems it is just an oddball carb. No major parts suppliers have an ATA kit but o'reillys. :(

It might be close enough to other carbs from the same year that you could use most of the parts.  You'd just have to figure out which is closest and what the differences are.

I think I have that part in my spare carb, I 'll take a peek before school and let you know.....I can not use the carb body because I bent the throttle shaft and had to get a new carb when I rebuilt mine..

Is it used or new from a kit?  I wanted to stick a new one in to eliminate any wear.

It's used and it's a part that I did not replace....It's a not really item that will wear out in the first place or it would be in the rebuild kit.....

Then I guess I don't need it.  I just wanted to put a new one in cause I figured the brass would wear down after a while.  It seemed to stick a little bit when I messed with it though, is that a problem?

Just clean it up with some carb cleaner and you should be fine....
