74 wagon 2.3 turbo swap questiions
« on: June 12, 2013, 09:00:43 AM »
Hi all
I just started my 2.3 Turbo into a 74 wagon swap and I had a couple questions;
-does anyone have a photo of a Volvo intercooler mounted in a pinto??
-how about a photo of a serp belt power steering delete setup??

Thanks to all for the great info on this site!!

1st thing you need to do is remove the lump on the passenger side inner fender to make room for the turbo. I did it on this car even though I'm not putting a turbo on it just in case I do sometime down the road. I only posted this point since you have 2 posts. If you already knew it was an obstruction then disregard.

I did very much the same thing Pinto 5.0 did.  In my case the IHI waste gate module hangs rather low, So my bottom half is a bit different than his.  I used the Turbo Coupe battery tray in the driver's front when I made room for the turbo.

I know the early engine compartment is narrower but after looking at yours I hope I removed enough metal.

For photos of a Volvo IC in a Pinto, see this recent thread on another forum that should help.

Ughhh..., my car has gotten rather dirty. But, I think I have only driven the Turbo Pinto all of three miles in the past year.  Anyway, here is the marginal clearance I have with the IHI wastegate. As you can see the sheet metal has a downward curve. I drilled a hole so flammables can't puddle.

The whole fit is very tight. The steering rack to oil pan, the rear starter bearing to steering rack strap, the upper throttle body to hood and as shown the wastegate to inner fender all have no more that 1/8" clearance.

Wow, that's tight. I wonder how much clearance the IHI's have with the late engine compartment.
