Oil Pump Drive??
« on: August 28, 2014, 07:45:51 AM »
Hello Crew.
Can someone tell me what part of the 2.3 actually drives the oil pump?? If the timing belt is removed or broken will the oil pump spin?? I'm starting to think I should have do a bit more research on this project.  Thank You In Advance.

Thank You Very Much bbobcat75!
That answers why the new oil filter was still dry after pulling the vehicle around in gear spinning the motor.

Gee, I sure hope you didn't tear up something doing that, I had a guy who we built a super 440 Magnum motor for that then insisted on towing car to try to start it when his new engine startup skills were lacking, it tore up the cam lobes and put metal dust all in the engine and it had to be totally rebuilt before it even fired up once. Pretty dang sad, that one was. Couldn't trust him after that to start it, I had to go over and get it running for him on the second one. The guy was an engineer to boot. A '70 Charger nut, he had like 5 of them. One was 426 Hemi too but his tuneup skills were like the others and it was a dog too.

Hello AMC49.
I hope I didn't screw myself, but at this point in the project I just needed to see if anything would move at all. I didn't pull it very far or fast. Most of the time the transmission was in natural so I could work the front and rear ends.
If I did any damage it's on me! (more time than brains)

Find a junk distributor & grind the teeth off the lower gear & weld a short piece of 1/2" steel rod where the rotor used to be & chuck it up to a drill & run it till you have oil pressure
'73 Sedan (I'll get to it)
'76 Wagon driver
'80 hatch(Restoring to be my son's 1st car)~Callisto
'71 half hatch (bucket list Pinto)~Ghost
'72 sedan 5.0/T5~Lemon Squeeze

Well Crew, we have some oil pump action.
Didn't have an old distributer shaft to use but did manage to turn the gear on the front of the motor that runs the pump & distributor with a right angle 3/8 air ratchet. Oil came spewing out of the port where you install the oil filter. (oil filter had been removed) As soon as I saw oil I stopped turning the gear.
Belt install tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Now put a filter on and spin it until you see oil flowing up on top of the head for full lubrication..

Excellent Idea "74 PintoWagon".
Will give that a try this morning.

On another note. Please excuse me if I have posted a few of my comments in the wrong section. I see there is a spot (Your Project) might be more appropriate for projects like my "Pinto" motor in a "Jeep". I'll put further posts in that section.
And last but not least what a great bunch of Guys with outstanding knowledge and help.
