Oil cooler for turbo?
« on: November 10, 2006, 10:39:59 PM »
Has anyone tried to make a seperate oil tank and cooler just for the turbo? I am wondering if the turbo would pump the oil in and out by itself or would you need to hook a pump up to it?

No, the turbo does not pump its own oil. It is fed by the engine oil pump, and the oil drains back out and into the engine. I have seen people use a aftermarket oil cooler (air), but I would NOT reccamend putting it in-line with the turbo. A drop in oil pressure/supply to the turbo can have catastrophic effects on it.

I was thinking to put a 12v oil pump on it with its own tank and cooler. The pumps I have seen are made for big rigs so the oil pressure should be plenty.

I think you may be over thinking it a bit.  I have done a couple of systems where I use and external adapter to a remote filter then to a cooler and then on the way back to the motor I run and AN adapter allowing a -3 line up to the turbo.  The oil is filter clean and run through a cooler.  The turbo wants to see a hot oil (engine temp) not cold oil that will slow it down.  I do not recommend doing this on a stock oil pump though.

That sounds right now that I THINK about it. I guess cold oil is not good. I was just exploring options. I want to have the best I can and "try" to do it right. Thanks guys!
