non-egr spacer?
« on: March 22, 2015, 12:50:11 PM »
hey all,  Is there a non-egr spacer for the 2.8 intake?   I want to eliminate the egr valve set up.  On the original intake that came with the car, the egr set up was jb-welded tight to not do anything.  i changed the intake to try and get the engine through our old smog tests. (didn't help)  cam set up is what i failed at.  now that the smog is gone i want to convert back. but thought it is easier to change the spacer than redo the intakes again.

thanks  cheers

They made two different intake for the 2.8 in the pinto, one had a round hole to EGR spacer the other was square , I used the round hole one on my 76 , taped and put a pipe plug in it , the other side I made a adaptor for the air flow valve for the fuel injection, I have a square hole spacer it you want it, the other would be the later 2.8 in a Ranger or bronco II with the 2.8 , but maybe too tall, or option #2 would move to a state that does not look under the hood or stick their nose in the tail pipe, what state are you in and what are they looking at, what comes out the tail pipe or is everything hooked up for the year you have , Later Blaine

Hi Blaine,  i have 3 2.8 motors,  1 is from a truck so it has the taller and longer egr set u p.  the other is from a car with smaller style.  do you happen to have a picture or 2 of what your set up looks like?

i could be interested in using your ideas or copying what you made/use.

they used to sniff at the pipe before, but i changed to duals and a custom ground cam that the sniffer didn't agree with.  they set the car (pinto) to factory emissions on the calibrator so i was screwed before i started.  Now though they have abolished all emissions here in BC where i live.  they don't care what is under the hood....  and get this...  they didn't test anything built before 1940, so you can see all these 32 coupes fully blown with raw gas dripping from the pipes and not a sniffer ever to test the cars... me in a little pinto with marginal levels fails .... I love government BS.....

thanks......

ps getting the 2150 carb professionally rebuilt from a carb shop a couple miles from me so this will help also.   but i have to kill the egr crap.

thanks

I will take some photos this weekend for you, but I guess you ditched the air pump on the side of the engine also , most do, you you still have the cats on the car, some pintos had duel cats some had a single , (mine used to have a single now none) you say they abolished smog testing there , how come they are still stick a sniffer in it ?, if they are you will have to have a cat on it , had a few friends up north that went through the same BS , the set up you have off the ranger work a little better than the stock pinto and later egr valves had sensors built into them and was run by a computer , which was also conected to a feedback carb, and a O2 sensor, that would be to much BS for any body to hook up, and is the car a daily driver , or a hobby , if it is a hobby and your going to keep the car and only have to test the car one time a year and want to stop the fear of not passing the test every time you go, find a used propane carb set up and hook it up temp (remove after the test) and you will have them beating the top of the test machine thinking something is wrong with it, it burns clean , (save for plan "B") later Blaine

hi,  i may have not explained myself clearly.  There is no more emissions testing in my province as of Jan 1 2015.  gov summarized it wasn't needed any longer.

When I built the motor, I took the cam to a custom shop near by and had it given a nice 5200 RPM grind that wasn't compatible with the emissions testings' factory settings for the 78 pinto. so it would fail the sniff. not needed any more.

the duals are a set of glass bottles that then feed another set of thrush style mufflers.  no cats.  i don't need to redo the motor and use a 2.8 out of a 83 ranger (302 swap in the works). i don't need the cpu stuff to complicate the car.  this exhaust set up was a fail too.  lol

the car is a hobby/daily driver (spring summer) i am hoping when i get it running properly.  mainly wanting to see around the egr set up.

love to see the pictures when you get a chance to get them together.  thanks
